Denmark:GESS PhD Scholarship

GESS – The Graduate School of Environmental Stress Studies hereby invites applications for an international PhD scholarship in population modeling. The successful candidate will be enrolled in GESS and affiliated with both the Danish National Environmental Research Institute at Kalø, DK and University of Reading, UK. The candidate is expected to start 1 March 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.

GESS is an international graduate school that covers a broad range of research topics within the area of environmental stress. Both natural and anthropogenic sources of stress are included, and effects of stress at all levels, from molecular- to whole ecosystems, may be studied.

The Ph.D. project is financed by The Danish Research Training Council and includes salary, educational expenses and travel between participating institutions. The theme of the Ph.D. project will be, “Effect of individual variation on population dynamics”. We are seeking candidates with a Bachelor and/or Master degree in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or related subjects.

The present PhD scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, and the successful candidate will be enrolled in GESS through Roskilde University’s Environmental Sciences Programme.

Employment as a Ph.D. student is for a maximum period of three years. Employment is in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish confederation of Professional Associations). Candidates receiving GESS scholarships are automatically registered in the school. They are expected to participate actively in relevant courses, seminars and other activities arranged by GESS.

The application should include a statement of research interests and expertise (maximum 2 A4 pages), copy of official transcripts (courses taken and grades), degree certificate, and curriculum vitae. Letters of recommendation may also be submitted. Expertise in C++ or a similar language is essential.

The deadline for application is 2 January 2007, 12:00. Material received after this time will not be taken into account. Applications sent by e-mail will not be considered.
