PhD-student position in aquatic ecology

The objective of this PhD project is to study the trophic transfer of carbon and nutrients from phytoplankton and bacterioplankton to metazoan zooplankton, and how the trophic structure and function of pelagic food webs are affected by variable inputs of nutrients and organic matter. The work will to a large extent include laboratory experiments where metazoans are fed with phytoplankton and bacterioplankton.

The research will be conducted within the LEREC-project (Lake Ecosystems Response to Environmental Change), which aims are to generate new insight into the dynamics of lake ecosystems, train a new generation of aquatic ecologists, and provide guidelines for a sustainable use of lake resources. The project stresses the necessity to integrate new biogeochemical and ecological concepts in lake ecosystems research. Further information on ongoing projects of the research group can be found at: www.emg.umu.se/lerec/
