MSc In Environmental Sanitation Scholarship in Belgium

Programme content: The growing awareness of the impact of human activities on the environment and the resulting threat to both nature and humanity has convinced most governments of the need to include prevention of air, water and soil pollution as well as the sanitation of polluted sites in their priority action programmes. Since relatively few people have so far been trained to properly address pollution issues, it is imperative that, in addition to research into environmental matters, the education and training of specialists in pollution prevention and remediation are given urgent attention in every country.

The programme of this Master following Bachelor is essentially structured around the following themes: basic study of non-polluted environments; sources and causes of environmental pollution; methodologies for detection and analysis of environmental pollution; prevention and abatement of environmental pollution; treatment of solid waste; toxicology, ecotoxicology and risk assessment. The compulsory courses taught during the first year cover a variety of disciplines related to environmental sciences and technologies such as ecology, environmental (micro)biology, (eco)toxicology, environmental chemistry and environmental technology and engineering. All major areas of the environment – air, water, soil, sediments and biota, including humanity – are dealt with. During the first year, there is also room for elective courses for a total of 6 credits. As far as the second year is concerned, the number of compulsory courses is limited and the student has to choose a major (soil, water or air), comprising courses totalling at least 12 credits related to the master’s dissertation research. This enables the student to specialise in a particular field depending on the choice of major and dissertation subject. There is also room for one more course of at least three credits, to be selected from the list of elective courses also offered during the first year.

The growing demand for experts in environmental quality and sanitation at both national and international level constitutes a sound guarantee for the future employment of the graduates in governmental departments, non-governmental organisations, universities, industries and consultancy services.

Admission requirements: The programme is open to students who have a bachelor’s degree in pure or applied sciences, equivalent to at least three years’ university studies (e.g. chemistry, biology, geology, civil engineering or agricultural engineering). Sufficient knowledge at academic level of mathematics, physics and chemistry is an absolute prerequisite, which means that the candidate’s application is always evaluated, independent of the diploma. Some previous knowledge of biology, microbiology and/or soil sciences is an advantage. The candidate must be proficient in English.

Type of diploma: Master ’s degree.

MSc in Physical Land Resources Scholarship in Belgium

-Major in Soil Science
-Major in Engineering Geology

Programme content:

A country’s physical land resources are a fundamental pillar of support for human life and welfare. Worldwide population pressure and severe degradation, pollution and desertification problems are threatening this natural resource, which is relatively scarce for several countries, leading to competition between agricultural and industrial purposes, urban planning and nature conservation. To guarantee proper use and management of what is a basic commodity for a nation, well-trained specialists are given thorough knowledge of the properties and characteristics of this natural resource and solid insight into factors and measures that may alter its actual state and value.

The purpose of the major in Soil Science is to train researchers, academics and government staff in the inventory and detailed characterisation of land capacity, particularly soils. Graduates understand the development and evolution of soils under natural conditions or following human interference, using field, map, laboratory and remote-sensing data. They have the knowledge to use and manage soil and water in a sustainable way and optimise land use. The major in Engineering Geology offers training in non-agricultural use and application of soil, and includes geotechnical aspects (use of soil as building material or for foundations, slope stability and stability of excavations), the role of soil water and groundwater for water management and supply, and soil management in relation to environment and land use (erosion, sediment transport, coastal development and protection). The first year provides a general and comprehensive foundation in physical land resources and as such is accessible to students with a good (exact) scientific background that have a limited knowledge of physical land resources. The first semester courses are all general courses. In the second semester, there are majors in Soil Science or Engineering Geology, in addition to general courses and seminars. In the second year the student can continue the same major as in the first year. Some room for free choice of courses is provided within the major in Soil Science. The major in Engineering Geology offers a fixed package of courses, all organised at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The Master’s dissertation is very important. 50% of the credits (30 out of 60) are awarded for this research work and a full semester is accordingly provided for it. All courses have a theoretical and a practical part. Some courses include fieldwork and may be supplemented with excursions. The first year programme provides for informative and interdisciplinary seminars that allow students to participate actively and work independently. The thesis (second year) must be defended orally, in public before a jury.

Admission requirements

The two-year programme is open to holders of a degree in exact or applied sciences equivalent to at least four years’ university study (e.g. Bachelor of Science in agriculture, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, environmental sciences, geography or geology), with an adequate background in chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Type of diploma

Upon the successful completion of the required examinations the programme leads to the degree of Complementary Studies in Physical Land Resources after the first year. After the second year the programme leads to the degree of Master of Science in Physical Land Resources.

Deadline of Application: February 1, 2007

Graduate research assistantships in environmental fluid dynamics are available at the Physics Department at the University of Toronto for students beginning in August 2007. We are looking for highly motivated graduate students for projects involving laboratory, field and computational studies of environmental fluid dynamics. Possible projects involve the dispersion of fish larvae and invasive species in the Great Lakes, or field and laboratory observations of turbulent mixing in the stratified thermocline.

The candidates should have a good mathematical and computational background, and preferably a degree in physics, mathematics or engineering. The student must qualify for admission into the Masters or PhD physics program at the University of Toronto. Interested students should contact Dr. Wells (wells@utsc.utornoto.ca) at the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences, University of Toronto at Scarborough, Toronto, Canada.

Graduate Research Fellowship, Ecosystem Forecasting

A Graduate Research Fellowship (Ph. D.) is available at the Lake Superior Ecosystem Research Center, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan. The appointment will be in the Department of Biological Sciences with field studies in southern Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The southern Lake Michigan project deals with the “doughnut”, a late-winter productivity pulse in offshore waters caused by gyre entrainment of coastal nutrient-rich waters and sediments. The pulse may be linked to climatic warming (i.e. reduction of coastal ice) and is coupled to survival of overwintering copepods. The Lake Superior project deals with the Keweenaw Current in Lake Superior and propagule (resting egg dispersal) transport between embayments. Regular RA support may be supplemented by summer fellowship training at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI. Both projects emphasize aspects of ecological forecasting and involve training in remote sensing, shipboard sampling and use of CTD’s, BAT’s, and optical plankton counters (OPC) to characterize water masses and plankton. Work will be done jointly with NOAA GLERL chief scientists. We encourage individuals who seek remote sensing training and who are interested in plankton dynamics.

Candidates may apply by completing the forms at http:// www.gradschool.mtu.edu/ and must provide GRE scores and three letters of recommendation. Foreign students must also include TOEFL scores. Questions about the research program may be directed to W. Charles Kerfoot at wkerfoot@mtu.edu, whereas questions about the application should be directed to gradadms@mtu.edu.
