Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Modelling Biomolecular Signalling Pathways in Colorectal Cancer Cells

A position is available for a highly motivated student to undertake research studies leading to a PhD at The University of Sydney in the Australian Key Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis (http://www.emu.usyd.edu.au). The student will be based at the Electron Microscope Unit of the University and will work closely with staff of the Major National Research Facility - Nanostructural Analysis Network Organisation (MNRF-NANO) (http://www.nano.org.au).

Colorectal cancer is a common malignant disease, with the majority of deaths attributable to liver metastasis. In the Western world, it is the second cause of cancer death in women after breast cancer, and the third cause of cancer death in men after lung and prostate cancer. Our team explores the mechanisms of liver colorectal cancer metastasis, proliferation and as well as mechanisms of cell death and survival by collecting unknown fine structural tissue and (sub)cellular molecular information. In this project we especially endeavour to elucidaHte further the complex and dynamic machinery of membrane transport and signalling mechanisms which have been shown to be a key event in colorectal tumour cell survival and further metastatic outgrowth. The successful candidate will apply cutting-edge 3D and 4D microscopic methods in combination with correlative immunocytochemistry- and molecular biology techniques to address the aims of the study.

We are interested in talking to students with, or who expect to achieve, an Honours 1 or 2A degree or equivalent in disciplines such as biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, medicine, pharmacy, molecular biology or other related disciplines in the life sciences.

The scholarship valued at $24,851 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

The successful candidates will be employed in the project:

"Quantifying the Effects of Sediment Deposition, Compaction and Pore Fluid on Rock Properties and Seismic Signatures"

To projects aim is to better understand the relationships between mechanical and chemical sediment compaction, physical properties of rocks and seismic responses and to improve predictions of lithology and fluid content from seismic data. Furthermore combine results from experimental soil and rock mechanical analyses, in situ measurements in sedimentary basins, rock physics and seismic analyses. The main goal is to link the key geological processes; deposition and mechanical and chemical compaction to geophysical measurable parameters for a quantitative and practical analysis that can be applied in exploration. The fellows will work on compaction of sediments based on seismic data, geomechanical data and experiments, and available petrophysical data.

The project is a Research Council of Norway financed project through the PETROMAX program and is a cooperative project between research groups in sedimentology/diagenesis, rock physics and seismic analyses at several universities in Norway and North America. Participants in this project include researchers from Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Bergen, University of Oslo and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. Industry partners are Hydro and Statoil.

Closing date for application is 2006-12-31.

Applications are invited for postdoc and research fellowship (PhD) positions in geology/geophysics at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, Norway.

The successful candidates for the postdoc and research fellowship positions will be engaged in the large interdisciplinary research project "Petroleum-related regional studies of the Barents Sea region" (PETROBAR) funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) and Statoil under the PETROMAKS programme.

Partners in the research project are: Department of Geosciences (project leader) and Physics of Geological Processes (PGP), University of Oslo; Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen; International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS); Geological Survey of Norway (NGU); and Volcanic Basin Petroleum Research (VBPR). We will also collaborate with Russian scientists/institutions. The main goal of the PETROBAR project is to enhance the understanding of fundamental, large-scale, processes behind sedimentary basin formation and evolution in the Barents Sea region and their impact on the petroleum systems. We particularly address problems related to the tectonic development and processes responsible for vertical movements in Barents Sea sedimentary basins and surrounding areas. Deep processes responsible for the subsidence will have special attention, and new tectono-sedimentological/geodynamic models will be developed. The new, partly quantitative, understanding of basin development and petroleum systems will be used by petroleum industry to decrease exploration risk in the Barents Sea. The study will be regionally based, using data from both the Norwegian and Russian sectors of the Barents Sea.

The project has been divided into sub-projects (tasks) that are closely linked. The first three cover our integrated approach: (1) the basin architecture (structure, stratigraphy and evolution) is (2) linked to underlying structures in the crust and upper mantle and (3) numerical modelling is carried out to study key processes responsible for the basin formation and development. This threefold approach is applied in four thematic case studies including (1) East Barents Sea basin initiation and evolution, (2) Arctic magmatism, (3) SW Barents Sea basin evolution, and (4) Cenozoic structuring and uplift/erosion.

The postdoc(s) and research fellow(s) at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo will work on one or several of the following tasks:

* Basin architecture: Regional mapping to establish a structural and stratigraphic framework linking the western and eastern Barents Sea basins. Identify main tectonic events and map their spatial and temporal distribution. Refine the geological history - with emphasis on vertical movements.
* Deep structure: Integrated analysis of seismic, gravity and magnetic data to better constrain the deep basin configuration and crustal structure. Link basin architecture to underlying structures in the crust and upper mantle. Further development of regional 3D velocity and density models of the lithosphere.
* Construction of regional profiles: Provide constraints for 2D forward and inverse modeling (by project partners) focusing on tectonic development and temperature history.
* Rock physics: Study physical properties of deep basin fill in relation to compaction and metamorphosis. Provide modeling constraints.
* Arctic magmatism: Mapping the distribution of extrusives and intrusives. Absolute and relative timing of the volcanic activity. Quantifying vertical motions, erosion, and basin infill episodes likely influenced by the Early Cretaceous magmatism. Model the temperature and diagenetic effects of magmatism.
* Early Cenozoic compression/inversion: Plate tectonic setting of the early Cenozoic Spitsbergen fold and thrust belt. Mapping of compressional structures east of Svalbard and further east in Russian part of the Barents Sea. Search for age constraints of compressional structures in the eastern Barents Sea and adjacent to Novaya Zemlya. 2D and 3D modelling of intra-plate stress effects.
* Late Cenozoic uplift/erosion: Establish constraints for modelling of Late Cenozoic vertical movements (uplift, erosion, isostasy).

Application: The application may be written in Norwegian or English and should be marked with the appropriate reference number. Applications should be sent to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Attn: Thomas Brånå, P.O. Box 1032 Blindern, NO-0315 Oslo, Norway. E-mail: thomas.brana@matnat.uio.no

Applicants should submit:

* Application letter including a statement of interest (related to the list of research tasks above) and indicating a preferred starting date.
* Curriculum vitae including one set of certified copies of certificates.
* A list of published and unpublished works.
* Three copies of scientific works (printed or non-printed) that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee.
* Names and contact information of two references.

For the postdoc position(s) a PhD degree in geology/geophysics or related fields is a minimum requirement.

The purpose of the research fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral (PhD) degree. The position requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and admission approved within the duration of the probationary period of six months. Two of these grants (Kathryn Davis Grant and Shelby Cullom Davis Grant) are intended for students of any nationality having completed a course of studies in an American university, two other grants (Davis Grants) are intended for two Muslim students.

These grants will be attributed in the Spring of 2007 to students starting their PhD programme in September 2007.

They will exempt them from tuition fees and provide a living allowance of CHF 15 000 per year.

They will last for a period of 4 years, providing satisfactory progress is made in their Ph.D. studies.

The position is with the Division of Automatic Control, Automation and Mechatronics at the Department of Signals and Systems. At the division, we have for many years conducted research in automatic control with automotive applications. One of the projects concerns feedback control of combustion engines and is carried out in cooperation with other research groups within CERC, Combustion Engine Research Centre. The objective of the project is to investigate how new sensors can be used to continuously control the combustion in order to e.g. improve the engine efficiency. The project now needs to be strengthened with a PhD student in automatic control, with an emphasis on feedback control of diesel engines.

Tasks
The position involves research in modelling, estimation and control, relevant for the application and in cooperation with researchers in signal processing and combustion engineering. The PhD position, which aims at a doctoral degree, also encompasses attending PhD courses and teaching at the bachelor and/or master level.

PhD position in High Voltage Engineering in Sweden

Project aims at studying the interaction between electrical discharges and charges deposited on the surface of outdoor insulating materials by means of computer simulations. The goal is to understand the influence of deposited charges on the flashover characteristics of high voltage insulators. It appears in practice that a number of unexpected flashovers can be related to surface charging that create obstacles for further developments and applications of new outdoor insulation technology. The main outcome of the project will be new knowledge necessary for overcoming these obstacles and to facilitate a broader use of new insulator materials and new design principles through a better understanding of the surface charging phenomena involved.

The industrial PhD position is placed within a newly created organization, called High Voltage Valley in Ludvika, which is administrated by Samarkand2015 AB. The PhD student's academic affiliation will be coupled to the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology at Chalmers at the Graduated School in High Voltage Engineering. The project is to be performed in close co-operation with the ongoing experimental PhD project. It involves developing mathematical and computational models of electrical discharges in atmospheric air on surfaces of solid insulating materials, studying charge transport and relaxation processes on gas-solid interfaces, carrying out numerical simulations for specific experimental conditions and analyzing physical mechanisms of experimentally observed phenomena. The position covers initially 2.5 years long project leading to a degree of Technical Licentiate in Engineering. A successful fulfillment of this task will yield a possibility for an extension for another 2.5 years period with a PhD degree as goal. The project supervision is to be provided jointly by researchers from Chalmers and Uppsala University as well as from industry (ABB and STRI). The position is financed by the Elforsk's Elektra Program.

We look for you who have M.Sc. degree in Electric Engineering, Technical Physics, Computational Physics or in Materials Science with knowledge in numerical methods for solving PDEs and an experience in computer simulations. An ability to work in a team and to focus on both experimental and theoretical activities is a necessary prerequisite. A working knowledge of English (both speaking and writing) is also required.

PhD student position in Communication Systems

The position is with the Division for Communication Systems which belongs to the Department of Signals and Systems. The division pursues advanced research in wireless and fiber optical communication links and systems. The researchers have participated in developing 3G (WCDMA) and took part in the first demonstration of communication via ultra-wideband (UWB) in Europe (in 2004). Currently, the division participates, among other things, in an EU project which develops the 4th generation wireless communication system and a European network of excellence in wireless communications. The open position is funded by the Swedish Research Council and deals with reliable packet transmission in ultra-wideband systems. This work will be performed in close cooperation with similar UWB research in the High Speed Wireless Communication center, which Lund University and Chalmers is about to start with funding from the Foundation of Strategic Research.

Tasks
The student will participate in developing new transmission techniques for high speed short range UWB communication systems. The main priority is to develop new channel codes and modulation schemes, which are specially designed for the properties of UWB communication links. The channel codes currently in use have been designed to minimize the average bit error probability on channel models that do not at all apply to channels in UWB systems. We have proposed completely new design criteria for channel codes in UWB systems and the project aims at designing channel codes according to these new principles. The work consists of both analytical studies of properties and performance of channel codes in UWB systems, as well as computer search for optimum codes and computer simulations of the performance of the codes.

Undergraduate teaching and other departmental work is also part of the position. The major part of this is to be a teaching assistant, laboratory assistant or project assistant in courses within the communications area.

You must have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar subject. You
- must have taken courses on digital communications and wireless communications and have obtained good results in these,
- should have experience of independent project work within the communications area,
- must be independent but should at the same time be able to work in projects with others,
- must be full of initiative and have analytical skills,
- should be good at programming,
- must be fluent in both spoken and written English, since most of the education is in English and you must write your own publications in English, and
- should have the ability to communicate research results and teaching material in a pedagogical and easily understandable way.

Contact details
The position is for a period of maximum five years. A maximum of 20% of this time period will be used for undergraduate teaching and other departmental work. The rest of the time is for the research towards a PhD degree and for taking the courses required for the degree.
