PhD position in Microbiology

A 3-year PhD position is available on the topic "In situ gene expression and ecophysiology of thermophilic cyanobacteria in hot spring microbial mats".

The project can start March 1st 2007 and will be co-supervised by professor Michael Kühl, Marine Biological Laboratory, University of Copenhagen (www.mbl.ku.dk/mkuhl) and professor Arthur R. Grossman, Carnegie Institution of Plant Science, Stanford University fttp://fumarole.stanford.edu/page.php?INDEX=12).

We seek a candidate with an excellent masters degree in environmental microbiology and with documented experience with microsensor technologyand/or molecular ecological methods. Experience with field work is advantageous.

The PhD project shall combine advanced molecular techniques for studying gene expression and regulation with modern microsensor techniques in ecophysiological studies of thermophilic photosynthetic bacteria in hot spring microbial mats. The work will primarily involve both laboratory based studies and field studies of hot spring microbial mats and cultivated thermophilic phototrophs but will also involve data mining of recently mapped genomes and metagenomes.

Field work will take place in Yellowstone National Park in collaboration with the supervisors and a NSF-funded Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research project http://landresources.montana.edu/FIBR/).

The candidate will be based at the Marine Biological Laboratory and enrolled as a PhD student at the Biology PhD School, University of Copenhagen. However, training and use of molecular techniques will largely take place at Stanford University during one or several visiting periods. Altogether, the candidate should be willing to spend about 30-50% of the project period in the US. Funding for travel and other moving expenses between Denmark and USA will be provided.

Deadline for applications is January 31'st 2007.

Applications should contain documentation for previous education and scientific achievements
(CV, graduation certificates, thesis and publications) as well as a letter of motivation containing a short (1-2 pages) outline for a research project under the given topic. Up to two letters of recommendation are accepted.

PhD student position in Limnology / Aquatic Microbiology

The aim of the project is to study how freshwater bacterial communities respond to altered levels of solar radiation with special focus on growth and survival of pathogenic bacteria. Aquatic bacteria play a key role in biogeochemical cycles and recycling of organic matter. Many aquatic bacteria also affect man by causing infectious disease and by modifying the aquatic environments (e.g. cyanobacterial blooms). Hence there is considerable interest in identifying environmental factors that shape and control the composition and function of natural bacterial communities. The project is to a large extent based on quantitative and culture-independent molecular tools. The overall goal is to improve our understanding of how future environmental changes that directly or indirectly control light climate in surface waters may influence water quality.

The successful applicant should have an academic degree in biology, environmental science, biotechnology or other relevant field. Applicants with previous experience in microbiology, molecular biology and aquatic sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.

For further information about the position, please contact Stefan Bertilsson, stebe@ebc.uu.se, 018-4712712. The trade union representatives are Anders Grundström, SACO, phone +46 18 4715380, Carin Söderhäll, TCO/ST, phone +46 18 4711996 and Stefan Djurström, SEKO, tel 018-471 33 15

Two Ph.D. positions in Hydrogeophysics

The Applied and Environmental Geophysics Group of ETH Zurich anticipates openings for two Ph.D. positions in hydrogeophysics to be carried out within a multidisciplinary river restoration project in the vicinity of Zurich. One of the positions will be dedicated to fully coupled hydrogeophysical inversion using time-lapse crosshole electrical resistance tomography, whereas the other will focus on developing three-dimensional hydrological models from inversions of surface-based geophysical and hydrological data.

The successful candidates should hold a Diploma or Masters degree in geophysics, physics, environmental engineering or computational hydrology, and should have a keen interest and preferably some experience in geophysical and/or hydrological forward modeling and inversion. The candidates must be willing and able to perform extensive field work. We are a dynamic international research group working on a wide variety of high profile topics in applied and computational geophysics. The working languages in our group are English and German.

Specific questions regarding the PhD projects can be directed to Dr. Laurent Marescot (email: laurent@aug.ig.erdw.ethz.ch) and Dr. Niklas Linde (email: linde@aug.ig.erdw.ethz.ch).

Interested candidates should send their Curriculum Vitae and the names and addresses of three referees by February 15, 2007 to:

4 years Ph.D. fellowship in Marine Geophysics

Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, University of Tromsø, Re: 06/2183

The Department of Geology, University of Tromsø is currently seeking a strong and highly motivated candidate for a Ph.D. project in the field of marine geophysics with a specialization in gas hydrates, heat flow and fluid flow processes. He or she will explore the dynamics of gas hydrates in sediments of mid-ocean ridges at high latitudes.

The marine geophysics and geology group at the Department of Geology has broad experience, covering complementary fields in seismic stratigraphy, 3D seismic interpretation and visualization, gas hydrates and fluid flow, sedimentary processes and geohazards, and paleoclimate and palaeoceanography. The work of the group is related to the development of continental margins in the north, where easy access and possession of an ice-breaking research vessel (RV Jan Mayen) give us a considerable advantage, nationally and internationally. The group has developed advanced knowledge in the application of 3-D seismic technology and multi-component seismic data. Successful candidates are encouraged to make full use of the department's processing and interpretation facilities including a seismic lab with several top-level workstations, a 3-D visualization facility and a full suite of industry-standard software packages for processing, interpretation and modeling of seismic data. Masters and PhD Scholarships at Graduate Institute of International Studies

A substantial number of scholarships in Switzerland are allotted each year by the Institute to Master and Ph.D. students on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

There are two kinds of grants:

a. tuition scholarships,
b. full scholarships.

Their duration is of one year with only one possible renewal. Tuition scholarships cover fees for one academic year and are intended for outstanding students.

Five tuition scholarships are offered by the FERIS Foundation (Fondation pour l’enseignement des relations internationales en Suisse) for the academic year 2007-2008.

They will be attributed in Spring 2007.

Full grants amount to CHF 15 000 paid in ten instalments.

Recipients are exempt from tuition fees but not from the University of Geneva’s set fees (CHF 65 per semester).

Certain full grants are awarded under special conditions (duration and/or geographical origin).

Davis Doctoral Grants

Four full scholarships of an exceptional duration (four years) will be attributed in Spring 2007 to students admitted to the Institute’s Ph.D. programme in September 2007.

Two of these grants (Kathryn Davis Grant and Shelby Cullom Davis Grant) are intended for two students (one woman and one man) having completed a course of studies in an American university, notwithstanding national origin.

Two other grants (Davis Grants) are intended for two Muslim students (one woman and one man).

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation Grants (SDC), Federal Department of Foreign Affairs

25 full scholarships intended for Third World or Eastern European nationals.

Alumni Grants (from AAI, Association des Anciens de l’Institut)

About ten full scholarships financed by a Geneva foundation and attributed to students from developing countries under the condition that they commit themselves to return to their country at the end of their course of studies so that their fellow countrymen may benefit from their training.

Elemér Hantos Grants: one or two full scholarships from Fondation pour l’Europe centrale for students from that area.

Fondation Ousseimi Grants: three full scholarships for students from Mediterranean countries.

Tokyo Foundation Grants: between one and five full scholarships (variable according to years), usually attributed to Ph.D. students.

Note: Students benefiting from other grants than those allotted by the Institute or by the Swiss Government must pay the Institute’s tuition fees.

Procedure

Students seeking admission to the Institute should include their grant request with the application form.

Deadline: 31 January 2007
