Limnology Internship

Carlander-Bachman Limnology Internship

The Iowa State University Limnology Laboratory (ISULL) is sponsoring an ongoing internship program for college and university students seeking research experience in the aquatic sciences. This is a paid, one-year program, and can carry academic credit from this Research 1 university. The deadline for application is March 15, 2008. Interviews will be conducted at the ISULL in Ames, IA Early April, 2008.

Under the direction and supervision of Professor John A. Downing, ISULL performs aquatic ecosystem research through its in-the-field sampling capabilities, analytical laboratory facilities, and professional data analysis. Successful applicants will work on a variety of aquatic ecosystems, from tiny lakes to large rivers. Our laboratory performs standard testing procedures for analysis of biological, microbiological, and nutrient, in lake, stream, river, and wetland ecosystems. We also use geographic information systems (GIS) and watershed models to analyze how practices in a watershed affect that watershed's lake or stream.

This program offers a unique opportunity to work under the mentorship of scientists and professionals to gain a broad range of practical field and laboratory experience in water quality research. The internship also provides an opportunity for students to develop and conduct individual research projects. At the end of the program, participants develop a poster, a presentation, and submit a written report of their work.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Students receive a stipend for a 9 or 12-month internship. Candidates must have full-day availability and be available for overnight travel Monday through Thursday. Applicants with class and/or work experience with biological, water chemistry or habitat assessment sampling techniques are preferred. Students register for internship credits through Iowa State University (or their home institution).

Students interested in this internship should send a letter of intent, resume and unofficial copy of their transcripts, preferably by e-mail, to:
