PhD scholarships Graduate School for Integration, Production and Welfare

At the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus, a number of PhD scholarships will be available from January 1, 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarships are offered within quantitative analyses of labour market and welfare policies, including e.g. analysis of the effects of labour market programmes, the effects of programmes in relation to children, youth, families, immigrants or elderly, or the use of economic incentives in employment or integration policies. The aim is to analyse different types of interventions targeting these groups, and to develop and apply econometric methods for evaluating programmes using micro data.


The PhD scholarships are placed within the Graduate School for Integration, Production and Welfare, and they are affiliated with the Department of Economics and the Danish National Institute of Social Research. A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the PhD student will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also Finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

[Belgium] 2008-2009 VLIR-UOS Scholarship Programme for Master and PhD

The international study opportunities include the VLIR funded International Courses (ICPs) and the International Training Programmes (ITPs).

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 ICPs or one of the 6 ITPs.

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Although these programmes primarily address students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Ph.D. position in ocean circulation or biogeochemical dynamics

Modeling ocean circulation or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings.

A full funded Ph.D. position will be available at the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE), Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

We seek highly motivated geoscientists interested in working with computational geoscience or geochemistry in relation to 3D ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings. In particular we are interested in understanding the shelf – ocean interaction, the development of oxygen oasis as well as anoxic conditions under various conditions through Earth History.

NordCEE is a center of excellence funded by The Danish National Research Foundation. NordCEE is focused on exploring the long history of life’s evolution on Earth. We investigate how biological evolution has both shaped and responded to the evolving chemistry of the Earth-surface environment (www.nordcee.dk).

Qualifications. M.Sc. or equivalent degree in geophysics, geology, computational geoscience or engineering is required, preferably with knowledge of ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics. Good English skills is required.

Salary and employment. Salary is according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the respective host organizations. For Ph.D. students presently about DKr. 22.345,17 per month before pension contribution, subject to change depending on qualifications. The Ph.D. employment will be for a total period of 3 years.

PhD opportunities

PhD positions. We wish to fill 2 PhD slots at The Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE) (www.nordcee.dk) at the University of Southern Denmark. NordCEE is an interdisciplinary center, which, through a mix of microbial and geological studies aims to understand the long term chemical evolution of the Earth surface environment. Potential PhD projects include: reconstruction of ancient chemical environments, ecology of modern microbial ecosystems, modeling, and molecular ecology. MS/PhD Graduate Research and Teaching Assistantship, Marine Science and Hydrographic Science

Opportunities for research and teaching assistantships (M.S. and Ph.D.) are available for qualified graduate students in the Department of Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (see http://www.usm.edu/marine/).

Current annual stipends range from $20,400 for Master Students to 21,600 for first year Ph.D. students, with full tuition waivers, health insurance coverage and other university fees paid. The department has active ongoing basic and applied research programs in all emphasis areas (biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography and hydrographic science), with strong field- and lab-based interdisciplinary research components. Ph.D. Assistantship, Microbiology of Nuclear Blast Cavities

Underground nuclear blast cavities, resulting from cold war weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) represent a source of potential contamination to important regional aquifers and an as-yet unexplored habitat for subsurface microorganisms. We have obtained funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for the microbial characterization of this novel, extreme environment. A combination of cultivation-based and molecular detection protocols will be utilized to probe the diversity, bioremediation potential, and radiation resistance of microorganisms from the site. Substantial collaborative support has been secured from Pacific Northwest and Livermore National Laboratories as well as the Uniformed Health Sciences University.

The Desert Research Institute is a dynamic organization with over 150 faculty in atmospheric, hydrologic and ecological sciences and projects on every continent. This program will be a joint appointment between DRI and the UNLV School of Life Sciences, and thus the collective resources of both institutions will be available. QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess a recent or pending M.S. degree from an accredited institution in microbiology, microbial ecology, or a related field of study. Exceptional students with a B.S. degree or equivalent will be considered on a case-by-case basis. U.S. citizenship is strongly preferred due to DOE site access requirements. This position requires a willingness to perform collections under sometimes challenging field conditions, conform to DOE chain of custody and record keeping requirements, and travel to collaborating laboratories.
