PhD Position in Marine Microbiology - Amsterdam

The Institute for Biodiversity & Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, offers opportunities for a PhD student in Marine Microbiology and/or Biological Oceanography. Marine primary production depends on the availability of nutrients and light. Nitrogen is particularly important, because its low availability limits phytoplankton growth in large parts of the oligotrophic oceans.
Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria play a key role in the marine nitrogen cycle. Strikingly, however, oceanic nitrogen fixation seems largely restricted to the tropics. This suggests that the dominance of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria is strongly temperature dependent.

To obtain a better understanding, this PhD project will therefore run monoculture experiments and competition experiments with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria against non-nitrogen-fixing phytoplankton species at different temperatures. The project will include molecular, physiological and ecological aspects of nitrogen fixation. Which of the aspects under investigation will receive most attention will depend on the expertise and interests of the PhD student.

REQUIREMENTS:
1) Master degree (MSc, or comparable grade) in Biology or the Environmental Sciences, with specializations in microbial ecology, aquatic ecology, marine biology or biological oceanography.
2) Excellent laboratory skills, including experience with laboratory cultures of micro-organisms (bacteria, phytoplankton).
3) Excellent communication skills
4) Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary research teams.
5) Experience with mathematical models is a plus.

The appointment will be for a maximum period of four years (one year plus a further three years after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation. The salary will be in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 1,956 gross per month in the first year to a maximum of € 2,502 gross per month in the fourth year; there will also be secondary benefits (holiday allowance etc). Debt Problems After College

After College, you may have Student Loans to be paid. Further, you may also have accumulated credit card debts. And you decided to fixed things up before the situation completely gets out of hand. What can you do?

1. Do not spend more than what you earn. This is, I guess, the first step you should take if you want to be financially stable.
2. Consolidate your debts.

Now, if you are in deep debt, I would advice for you to seek pro active actions to solve your debt problem ASAP. I would suggest you seek debt relief and credit card consolidation counseling.

Debt counseling will simply provide you with advice and solutions to your debt and credit card problems. For example: credit card consolidation would recommend to you to close all your credit card but one. This way the debt becomes more manageable. Also, the credit counseling company will help you negotiate for lower interest rates, etc.

Seeking for help would not only improve your financial health but also would enable you to avoid problems such as sleep disorders, depression, relationship problems, health risks, social issues and mental breakdown.

PhD Position, Marine Biogeochemistry

PhD Position available in Marine Biogeochemistry at the Leibniz Institut für Meereswissenschaften in Kiel (IfM-Geomar), Germany as part of a DFG funded IPY GEOTRACES project.

Topic:“The influence of Fe on the distribution and kinetic speciation of Zn, Cd, Co and Ni in the Southern Ocean”.

Recent research has clearly demonstrated the role of iron supply in controlling primary productivity in the Southern Ocean and in turn the cycling of other key bio-elements (Co, Ni, Cd and Zn). It is now also clear that these other elements play a role in controlling the species composition of phytoplankton and importantly the rates at which macronutrients are consumed by phytoplankton. These changes in rates of uptake are then reflected as differences in the nutrient ratios, or metal to nutrient ratios, of the phytoplankton themselves. Understanding of these processes is thus critical for investigations into the primary productivity of the Southern Ocean and the sources and sinks for major nutrients. This project forms part of a comprehensive IPY GEOTRACES program and is focused on the chemical speciation and distribution of the key bio-elements (Co, Ni, Cd and Zn) over a range of different Fe and macronutrient conditions.

The PhD student will utilize state of the art techniques (FIA-chemiluminescence, Voltammetry) for laboratory and shipboard determination of trace metal speciation in the Southern Ocean, starting with a cruise in early 2008. While experience in analytical chemistry would be an advantage, applications from students with bioscience or geoscience background are also welcome.

Applications close September 14, 2007, and the candidate should be able to commence the project shortly thereafter. Candidates should have a good knowledge of either English or German. For general information on research at the Leibniz Institut für Meereswissenschaften und CAU-Kiel, see http://www.ifm-geomar.de

Online Education

When I was working in Saudi Arabia, I had so much free time that 80% of my daily routine been spent on the internet. This was necessary to keep boredom at bay. Now, don’t get me wrong, I was only doing this, after I have finished my job for the day (if there were any). Sadly, most of the time – there was nada – nothing, this was because every time I got an assignment, I finished the job in no time. Now thinking it over, I wished I spent my time on the internet, apart from blogging, on online education.

Getting education nowadays does not require you to be in the classroom. You must have noticed that the World Wide Web has made many things easier for everyone. Apart from doing you’re shopping, banking, search, second life, among others; you can enroll in an online education continuing program from a fully accredited educational institution, with a foreign sounding name. How’s that?

Now, if you enroll on one of these courses on line, do not be worried if you are working, or only have a limited time. Most of this institutions offer a flexible course schedules that you don't even have to commit a fixed day of the week to attend your online class. Schedules are adjustable, and you can download the assignment and lecture for the week anytime you are free.

I do not have to tell you that having a degree or a second degree will boost you income, and job opportunities, because they do.

Now, are you contemplating to get an online education? I suggest you visit www.degreescout.com. You can check their Adult Education Directory, or their Online Bachelor Degrees, and Engineering Degree programs for a degree that suits you. Good luck.
