Graduate Research Assistantships (Multiple Ph.D. & M.S. Positions)

Research opportunities: Several openings for M.S. and Ph.D. students to conduct fisheries ecology research in Lake Erie or Ohio reservoirs, using field, laboratory, and modeling approaches. General research topics include: 1) using a variety of techniques, including otolith microchemistry, to understand stock structure of Lake Erie fish populations; 2) understanding patterns and implications of seasonal movements of fish in Lake Erie; 3) incorporating watershed effects into our understanding of lake and reservoir food webs; and 4) incorporating habitat availability into our understanding of success of sportfish populations.

Location: Successful candidates would join a dynamic, interactive group of graduate students, post-docs, visiting scholars, and faculty at The Ohio State University’s Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (AEL) within the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (EEOB). Students would have the opportunity to work with Drs. Qualifications: A successful applicant will be creative, motivated, and capable of working well both independently and cooperatively. A degree in biology, ecology, aquatic sciences, or a related field is required. Students must have strong writing and quantitative skills and be interested in applying basic ecological approaches to fisheries management problems.

Salary: ~$1,825/month with some health benefits

Start date: Summer or Fall 2008

Graduate Student Assistantship, Evolutionary genetics of invasive species

One graduate position is available beginning September 2008.
The project involves analysis of hierarchical genetic structure of invasive tunicates at different spatial scales and aims to i) characterize spatial and temporal patterns of genetic structure during the establishment and subsequent spread of invasive tunicates; ii) identify potential sources and vectors of invasions; and iii) address taxonomic problems related to color morphospecies.

This work is part of the Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network (CAISN) which aims to examine vectors and pathways of invasions and to identify factors that affect the successful establishment of aquatic invasive species. http://www.uwindsor.ca/CAISN

Ideal candidates will have prior experience with molecular techniques (e.g. DNA sequencing) but students without prior experience will be considered provided they are interested in using molecular markers to understand species invasion and have the ability to work well in a collaborative research atmosphere.

Ph.D. position, Modelling biogeochemical dynamics

Modelling ocean circulation or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings.

A full funded Ph.D. position will be available at the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE), Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

We seek highly motivated geoscientists interested in working with computational geoscience or geochemistry in relation modelling 3D ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings. In particular we are interested in understanding the shelf – ocean interaction, the development of oxygen oasis as well as anoxic conditions under various conditions through Earth History. Experience with ocean circulation models such as MITgcm or ROMS is an advantage.

NordCEE is a centre of excellence funded by The Danish National Research Foundation. NordCEE is focused on exploring the long history of life’s evolution on Earth. We investigate how biological evolution has both shaped and responded to the evolving chemistry of the Earth-surface environment (www.nordcee.dk).

Candidates should hold a MSc degree in geophysics, geology, computational science or engineering, preferably with knowledge of ocean circulation and/or biogechemical dynamics. Good English skills are required.

The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month.

PhD in Applied Mathematics, Swinburne University of Technology

Full time scholarship (at A$19,616 per annum) leading to a PhD in Applied Mathematics is available to selected applicant. Topics of interest include nonlinear instability theory as it applies to problems in computational biology and geophysical fluid dynamics. The work will involve a combination of analysis and large scale computing. Applicants should have a strong background in Applied Mathematics or Physics with a bachelors or higher degree.
