PhD Scholarships in Photonics at Technical University of Denmark

PhD scholarships Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)

A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm[a-t]com.dtu.dk) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Department of Micro
and Nanotechnology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

At the moment we have openings within the following areas of research:

Growth and characterisation of semiconductor quantum dots and fabrication of photonic crystal based devices (Kresten Yvind; ky[a-t]com.dtu.dk).

Characterisation of pulse propagation in photonic crystal structures and ultrafast dynamics in quantum dots (Mike van der Poel; mvp[a-t]com.dtu.dk).

Theory and modelling of light-matter interaction in photonic crystal structures with quantum dots (Niels Asger Mortensen; nam[a-t]mic.dtu.dk).

Topology optimization of nanophotonic structures incorporating effects of nonlinearities and fabrication uncertainties (Ole Sigmund; sigmund[a-t]mek.dtu.dk).

Experimental and theoretical investigations of terabit systems emphasizing noise limitations and information capacity (Palle Jeppesen; pj[a-t]com.dtu.dk).

We are looking for candidates with a strong track record and with a good experimental, theoretical and/or computational background in photonics, electromagnetics or materials engineering and physics. The annual salary of PhD students starts at approximately 277,000 DKK (36,900 EUR) + pension.

For further information please contact Jesper Mørk or the persons mentioned above, or see the full job announcement at the homepage of DTU. Please send your application as a single pdf file, including CV, list of publications, certificates of exams and grades, as well as a list of references to:

The Master is patroned by the Ministry of Research and Foreign Affairs, together with sponsor companies. The Master is structured in traditional front lectures and in laboratory sessions and the program is divided in 4 semesters. The applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications.

The Master program is focused on the provisioning of competence across Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science, taking into account tecno-economic aspects and services supported by the networks. In the first semester the students will build solid grounds in basic disciplines of information engineering. In the second and third semester they will acquire strong competence in the area of: software for telecommunication, design of wired and wireless networks, network architectures and tecno-economic aspects, network components. In the last semester, they will develop and original Master thesis in Scuola Sant’Anna Laboratories or in one of the sponsor companies. At the end of the Master program they will be able to design, plan and manage complex telecommunication infrastructures with heterogeneous network segments both from the hardware and software point of view.

The Master Director is Prof. Giancarlo Prati, Director of the Center of Excellence for Communication and Information Engineering (CEIIC) and President of Inter-universitary National Consortium fo Telecommunications (CNIT).

The Scientific Responsible is Prof. Piero Castoldi, Associate Professor at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Director of CNIT National Laboratory for Photonic Networks in Pisa.

On-line applications are now OPEN. Read eligibility rules and application instructions
Eligible students can apply only by filling the admission form available on this page.
Deadline: Applications must be submitted no later than June 30th 2008, ON-LINE including ALL information requested.

WHO CAN APPLY
Applicants must have a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications or any other equivalent title in the disciplines relating to the Information and Communication Technologies.

Ph.D. Scholarship in Public Policy Evaluation - Politecnico di Milano

Deparment of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering,
Politecnico di Milano (Italy)

Yearly value of each PhD scholarship: € 13,000 of which approximately €3,000 are held as retirement contributions.

Yearly net income of each PhD scholarship: approximately € 10,000.

Motivations and objectives of the research in this field: within the context of increasing globalisation of firms and markets, most public institutions are now aware of benefits stemming from both innovation and internationalization of the economic activities. However, studies on the evaluation of effectiveness and economic effects of public incentives are still scant. Main difficulties concern: (i) the need of transparency and examinations at regularly intervals; (ii) the difficulty of distinguishing direct vs. indirect effects, and (iii) the need of counterfactual evidence (what would have happened without the incentive?). The present research project aims at developing both a theoretical framework and an empirical analysis for the evaluation of public policies and incentives to innovation and internationalization of firms.

Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research: The research will be both theoretical (development of economic models on the basis of the literature) and empirical (gathering of primary and secondary data on direct and indirect effects of public policies and incentives to innovation and internationalization). Advanced statistic and econometric techniques will be applied in order to test research hypotheses.

Educational objectives: acquiring a comprehensive knowledge of the literature on public policies and incentives, and developing the capacity of elaborating it in a critical manner. Developing advanced statistical and econometric skills for testing theoretical hypotheses. In short, becoming able to write scientific papers on the topic to be published in top international journals.

Job opportunities: the issue of evaluation of public incentives to firms is of great interest for both economic scholars and policy makers. People earning a Ph.D. in this field can yearn for both an academic carrier (public policy evaluation is among the research lines of important economic and management departments) and a carrier in national and international public bodies.

Composition of the research group: a Full Professor, an Assistant Professor, two Dost-Docs, a PhD student, a contracted researcher.

Research director: Lucia Piscitello
e-mail: lucia.piscitello @ polimi.it
Application has to be received by 15 October 2008.
