4 years Ph.D. fellowship in Marine Geophysics

Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, University of Tromsø, Re: 06/2183

The Department of Geology, University of Tromsø is currently seeking a strong and highly motivated candidate for a Ph.D. project in the field of marine geophysics with a specialization in gas hydrates, heat flow and fluid flow processes. He or she will explore the dynamics of gas hydrates in sediments of mid-ocean ridges at high latitudes.

The marine geophysics and geology group at the Department of Geology has broad experience, covering complementary fields in seismic stratigraphy, 3D seismic interpretation and visualization, gas hydrates and fluid flow, sedimentary processes and geohazards, and paleoclimate and palaeoceanography. The work of the group is related to the development of continental margins in the north, where easy access and possession of an ice-breaking research vessel (RV Jan Mayen) give us a considerable advantage, nationally and internationally. The group has developed advanced knowledge in the application of 3-D seismic technology and multi-component seismic data. Successful candidates are encouraged to make full use of the department's processing and interpretation facilities including a seismic lab with several top-level workstations, a 3-D visualization facility and a full suite of industry-standard software packages for processing, interpretation and modeling of seismic data. The group has established an excellent link to the hydrocarbon industry in Norway and has 3-D seismic data sets to work with in designated target areas.

The successful candidate will be investigating gas hydrate dynamics, fluid flow phenomena and their evolution in a sedimented mid-ocean ridge offshore W-Svalbard. The position is within the Arctic Marine Geology & Geophysics (AMGG) research school financed by the University of Tromsø.

Applicants need to possess a Master (Diploma) degree in marine geophysics, marine geology or physics. He or she may have experience with one or more of the following: acquisition, processing and interpretation of a range of seismic data (reflection, refraction, ocean-bottom seismics), fluid and/or heatflow studies, and hydrogeology. Knowledge of advanced geophysical techniques like multi-component seismics, inversion, imaging by pre-stack depth migration, AVO, rock-physics modeling, multi-attribute analysis or numerical modeling skills are advantageous. Good computer skills using Windows as well as Unix and Linux operation systems are desirable.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and will be for a period of 4 years. Salary is placed according to LTR code 42 (316200 NOK/year).

Application deadline: 23. January 2007
