The rock deformation group of the Geology Institute at Basel University, Switzerland, invites applications for a PhD studentship in the field of experimental rock deformation.
The PhD project will focus on single and bi-crystal quartz deformation to study the temperature dependence of different slip systems and the potentially different dynamic recrystallization microstructures. The work will involve high P-T experimental deformation (using a solid medium apparatus), detailed microstructural analysis using computer integrated polarization microscopy (CIP), SEM, EBSD, FTIR, and TEM.
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student with a background in structural geology, geophysics, or other laboratory or experimental work. He/she should be able to combine and learn several analytical techniques, also in collaboration with our project partners in Germany, the US, and Australia.
The project should begin in February 2007 but the start could be postponed. The position is funded for a maximum of 4 years.
For more information, please contact Renee Heilbronner (renee.heilbronner@unibas.ch) or Holger Stünitz (holger.stuenitz@unibas.ch).
Applicants should please send a detailed CV, together with a short letter of motivation and names (with e-mail addresses) of referees to:
