Programme contents:The main objective of the Interuniversity Programme Master of Science in Food Technology (IUPFOOD) is to provide students with comprehensive training in the fieldmof food technology, food science and food engineering, with special emphasis on the technology of the production of specific foodstuffs for developing countries and on tropical crops postharvest and preservation technology. It is expected that participants returning to their home countries will be able to efficiently appraise and solve problems related to food technology, food science and food engineering. In the first year of the MSc Programme (60 credits) in-depth knowledge in food science, engineering and food engineering is obtained, in order to achieve a common knowledge base between students from different backgrounds. The first year of the MSc programme is the same for all students. The courses of the first semester are hosted by UGent, while the courses of the second semester are taught at K.U.Leuven. The second year of the MSc Programme (60 credits) provides broader knowledge in food technology in general and an indepth understanding in Postharvest and Food Preservation Engineering or Food Science and Technology, depending on the major. The second year of the programme is made up of specific courses on each major (18 credits), optional courses (12 credits) and a master thesis (30 credits). The major, the optional courses and the thesis topic are chosen after completing the first year. For the optional courses, the student may choose from the courses of the other major and the additional optional courses offered. This enables the student to compile a tailor-made study curriculum to suit his/her individual needs and interests.
Admission requirements
The MSc in Food Technology is open to holders of an academic Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree (typically a four-year programme in developing countries) from a recognised university, college or institute in a discipline related to the content of the programme (typically a degree in exact or applied sciences such as biological sciences, chemistry, food science and technology, chemical engineering and agricultural engineering), with an end result of at least second class upper or equivalent.
The participants should be fluent in written and spoken English. A score of at least 550 on a paper-based TOEFL test, a score of at least 213 on a computer-based TOEFL test or a score of at least 6.0 on a IELTS or equivalent test is required.
Each application will be evaluated by the IUPFOOD Educational Committee for admission.

Monthly allowance of €919 (to cover room and board, individual transport and personal expenses);

Settlement expenses: €500 (non-recurrent payment)
Fee covering postage costs of educational materials: €275 (non-recurrent payment)
One economy class return airline ticket (per academic year – arrangements for initial international travel to Belgium will be handled by VLIR; all other travel arrangements will be made by the host university)
Insurance (the host university provides medical, third party liability, accident, travel and repatriation insurance)
Annual tuition fees(the host university will cover the annual tuition fee,
up to €80)
