We are looking for a highly motivated individual to undertake research in coastal soft sediments ecosystems that will lead to a PhD. Potential areas of interest include quantifying/modelling relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function, benthic-pelagic coupling and benthic food webs. The successful candidate will have an MSc or BSc(Hons), ideally in marine ecology, biogeochemistry or mathematics. However, background is less important than a strong interest ecology and good quantitative/modelling skills. A key requirement is a willingness to undertake integrative research across a range of disciplines.
The research will form part of the NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research) led Coasts and Oceans OBI, a large multi-institutional programme involving marine scientists from throughout New Zealand. As part of this large programme the student will be very well supported, both in terms of access to equipment and mentoring. Scientists from NIWA and University of Waikato will jointly supervise the research. The University of Waikato has a long history of integrative coastal research and, combined with the internationally recognised investigations of soft-sediment processes undertaken by NIWA scientists, this scholarship represents an excellent opportunity.
The scholarship is open to students of any nationality and includes a competitive stipend plus fees for three years. The scholarship will remain open until filled and the start date is negotiable but we expect the successful candidate to have enrolled by October 2009.
