[Denmark] PhD Studentships in Quantitative Analyses of Labour Market and Welfare Policies - The Aarhus School of Business

At the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus, a number of PhD scholarships will be available from January 1, 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarships are offered within quantitative analyses of labour market and welfare policies, including e.g. analysis of the effects of labour market programmes, the effects of programmes in relation to children, youth, families, immigrants or elderly, or the use of economic incentives in employment or integration policies. The aim is to analyse different types of interventions targeting these groups, and to develop and apply econometric methods for evaluating programmes using micro data.


The PhD scholarships are placed within the Graduate School for Integration, Production and Welfare, and they are affiliated with the Department of Economics and the Danish National Institute of Social Research. A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the PhD student will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also Finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

[Belgium] 2008-2009 VLIR-UOS Scholarship Programme for Master and PhD

The international study opportunities include the VLIR funded International Courses (ICPs) and the International Training Programmes (ITPs).

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 ICPs or one of the 6 ITPs.

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Although these programmes primarily address students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Ph.D. position in ocean circulation or biogeochemical dynamics

Modeling ocean circulation or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings.

A full funded Ph.D. position will be available at the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE), Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

We seek highly motivated geoscientists interested in working with computational geoscience or geochemistry in relation to 3D ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics of shelf settings. In particular we are interested in understanding the shelf – ocean interaction, the development of oxygen oasis as well as anoxic conditions under various conditions through Earth History.

NordCEE is a center of excellence funded by The Danish National Research Foundation. NordCEE is focused on exploring the long history of life’s evolution on Earth. We investigate how biological evolution has both shaped and responded to the evolving chemistry of the Earth-surface environment (www.nordcee.dk).

Qualifications. M.Sc. or equivalent degree in geophysics, geology, computational geoscience or engineering is required, preferably with knowledge of ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics. Good English skills is required.

Salary and employment. Salary is according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the respective host organizations. For Ph.D. students presently about DKr. 22.345,17 per month before pension contribution, subject to change depending on qualifications. The Ph.D. employment will be for a total period of 3 years.

MS/PhD Graduate Research and Teaching Assistantship, Marine Science and Hydrographic Science

Opportunities for research and teaching assistantships (M.S. and Ph.D.) are available for qualified graduate students in the Department of Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (see http://www.usm.edu/marine/).

Current annual stipends range from $20,400 for Master Students to 21,600 for first year Ph.D. students, with full tuition waivers, health insurance coverage and other university fees paid. The department has active ongoing basic and applied research programs in all emphasis areas (biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography and hydrographic science), with strong field- and lab-based interdisciplinary research components. Ph.D. Assistantship, Microbiology of Nuclear Blast Cavities

Underground nuclear blast cavities, resulting from cold war weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) represent a source of potential contamination to important regional aquifers and an as-yet unexplored habitat for subsurface microorganisms. We have obtained funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for the microbial characterization of this novel, extreme environment. A combination of cultivation-based and molecular detection protocols will be utilized to probe the diversity, bioremediation potential, and radiation resistance of microorganisms from the site. Substantial collaborative support has been secured from Pacific Northwest and Livermore National Laboratories as well as the Uniformed Health Sciences University.

The Desert Research Institute is a dynamic organization with over 150 faculty in atmospheric, hydrologic and ecological sciences and projects on every continent. This program will be a joint appointment between DRI and the UNLV School of Life Sciences, and thus the collective resources of both institutions will be available. If you are a self-starter, looking for a chance to make a difference in a growing field, this unique project might be for you.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess a recent or pending M.S. degree from an accredited institution in microbiology, microbial ecology, or a related field of study. Exceptional students with a B.S. degree or equivalent will be considered on a case-by-case basis. U.S. citizenship is strongly preferred due to DOE site access requirements. This position requires a willingness to perform collections under sometimes challenging field conditions, conform to DOE chain of custody and record keeping requirements, and travel to collaborating laboratories.

Ph.D. assistantships -- eco-hydrology and spatial ecology of rivers and streams

Several Ph.D. assistantships are available in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University. These assistantships commence in August of 2008 and are based in Bozeman, MT – an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise!

Students will pursue questions in one of three broad research areas: 1) elucidating geomorphic and hydrologic controls on habitat diversity and biotic processes (e.g., biogeochemistry, productivity, metabolism, greenhouse gas emissions) in floodplain ecosystems; 2) developing novel, agent-based modeling approaches to simulate transport and biotic uptake of solutes from stream channels and hyporheic zones of gravel-bedded streams; and 3) linking geomorphology and hydrology to fish habitat diversity and utilization in mainstem rivers of Montana.

Students will work with Dr. Geoffrey Poole and will apply quantitative research techniques including simulation modeling, GIS analysis, and/or remote sensing, coupled with ample opportunities for field data collection and laboratory experiments and analyses.

Forestry Masters Scholarships for Developing Countries

SUTROFOR - Sustainable Tropical Forestry
Call for student applications

We offer an integrated two-year world-class Masters Course in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) based on our long experience in teaching and research, and building on masters programmes that have proved to be dynamic and viable. By joining the teaching and research experiences of five European leading educational institutions, this unique Course will constitute an in-depth educational programme with inherent impetus to stay at the forefront of research-based teaching strongly linked to realities in many European and non-European countries.

The SUTROFOR Course is offered by a consortium consisting of five institutions: (i) University of Copenhagen, Centre for Forest, Landscape and Planning, Copenhagen, Denmark, (ii) University of Wales, School of the Environment and Natural Resources, Bangor, Wales, UK, (iii) Technische Universität Dresden, institute of international Forestry and Forest Products, Germany, (iv) AgroParisTech-ENGREF, Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, Montpellier – France, and (v) University of Padova, Faculty of Agriculture, Padova, Italy.

The Course consists of a first study year at one of three institutions (Bangor, Copenhagen, Dresden) and a specialising second study year with different topics offered by each of the five institutions. The students are required to spend the second year at another university than the first one. The aim of the first study year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable Tropical Forestry. The learning outcomes are similar for the three first year institutions and allow students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year. The first study year ends with a Joint Summer Module, run as a two-weeks excursion to a Tropical country. You can specialise in the second year within the following topics: (i) Agroforestry systems (Bangor), (ii) Socio-economics of tropical forestry (Copenhagen), (iii) Tropical forest management (Dresden), (iv) Environmental management and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier), (v) Ethics in forestry and responsible trade in tropical forest product and services (Padova).

The specialisation includes a master thesis based on research and fieldwork inside or outside the EU. When students have acquired 120 ECTS by studying at two Consortium institutions (at least 60 ECTS at each) they will obtain a SUTROFOR double degree and the Diploma Supplement. All SUTROFOR modular activities can be completed in English, except the second year option at Montpellier, which is available mainly in French. The following degrees are awarded: MSc in Tropical Forestry in Copenhagen, MSc in Environmental tropical Forestry and MSc in Agroforestry in Bangor, MSc in Tropical Forestry in Dresden, MSc in Agricultural Sciences, specialisation Tropical and Rural Forestry in Montpellier, and MSc in Forestry and Environmental Sciences in Padova.

Consortium fees per year are € 4,500 for EU/EEA-EFTA students and € 8,000 for third-country students. EU/EEA-EFTA students are eligible for financial support, see http://www.sutrofor.net/. Around 20-30 Erasmus Mundus scholarships (€ 21,000 per year per student) are expected to be available for third-country students. 2 PhD students physiology & gene expression of marine animals

Within the newly established Junior Research Group (JRG) A1‚Ocean acidification’, embedded into the Excellence Cluster ‚The Future Ocean’ (www.future-ocean.de) at Kiel University / IfM-GEOMAR, we are seeking 2 highly motivated PhD students to study the effects of ocean acidification on ecophysiology and gene expression patterns in marine invertebrates (sea urchins, mussels, cephalopods). Ideal candidates will be creative, enthusiastic, and have exceptional problem solving abilities. Superior communication skills are essential. Candidates should have a degree (BSc honors, MSc or equivalent) in the biological / medical sciences. While a background in marine biology is a plus, it certainly is not a requirement.

Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

- molecular biological techniques (e.g. RNA extraction, cDNA library construction, real time PCR, microarrays, SSH, in situ hybridization) and bioinformatics
- marine invertebrate larvae culture and maintenance, especially of echinoderms and molluscs
- biochemistry and physiology of ion transport processes
- acid – base physiology

PhD projects will be designed to match existing strengths and career preferences of the successful candidates. However, a strong study focus will be placed on pH and ion regulation processes, especially during embryonic and larval development of our model species. In close collaboration with the Centre for Molecular Biosciences (ZMB), next generation sequencing techniques and high – throughput real time PCR techniques are available to study stress induced gene expression. Such studies will lead the way to develop new concepts on what mechanisms define sensitivity to ocean acidification.

Successful candidates will also become members of the Integrated School of Ocean Sciences (ISOS) PhD program (www.isos.uni-kiel.de). Salaries are based on the German TV-L system and are roughly comparable to US American / Canadian PhD student salaries.

PhD-researcher in Game and Media Technology

Job description

You will work on a project on automatic world generation based on real data. Building virtual worlds from real data such as panorama images is still a very labor intensive work, error prone, slow, and expensive. Therefore, the results is often small-scale, of low resolution, and not accurate. Our objectives are to research new algorithms to build virtual worlds automatically and from multiple data sources in order to alleviate these problems. We will exploit a combination of techniques from geometric pattern recognition, computer vision, and computational geometry. The envisioned results are methods that build virtual worlds fast and accurately. In this way, the quality of training people, mission planning, contingency planning, and decision making can be improved.

The project is part of the Game research for Training and Education (GATE) project. This research is performed in collaboration with TNO.

Qualifications

We ask MSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or any other relevant discipline. Knowledge and experience in programming (C++), algorithms and data structures, pattern recognition, computer vision.

Terms of employment

We offer a full-time temporary appointment as a PhD student for four years. Your gross salary starts with € 1,956.- per month in the first year and increases to € 2,502.- per month in the fourth year of employment. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% of annual salary and a end-of-year bonus of 3% per year.

In addition we offer: partially paid parental leave, subsidy for child care, flexible employment conditions in which you may trade salary for vacation days or vice versa.

PhD-Researcher Monetary and non-monetary quantification of the environmental health impacts of traffic

Job description

You will be working on the project “Monetary and non-monetary quantification of the environmental health impacts of traffic”. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Centre for Environmental Health Research (MGO) of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), Bilthoven, the Netherlands. You will be stationed at RIVM.

You will perform a literature review on the current approaches and strength and weaknesses of monetisation of health effects of environmental contaminants. You will compare these with approaches in environmental burden-of-disease estimates. You will design, execute, analyse and report on an empirical study into severity weighing of environment-related health effects and their monetary valuation in a multi-country setting. You will perform a case study on transport and health to jointly estimate monetary and non-monetary societal costs of environmental health effects, based on the empirical results and results from the literature review. You will work in a multi-disciplinary and international team and will present your findings at national and international meetings and conferences. You will publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and your PhD thesis. You will supervise MSc students during their internships and follow training courses relevant for your research.

Qualifications

An enthusiastic candidate with a MSc degree in the field of life sciences or biology, with a strong interest in health impact assessment. You have good organisational, communication and writing skills, especially in Dutch and English. You are also a team player and self-motivating. Experience with (environmental) epidemiology public health or health economics will be your advantage.

Terms of employment

We offer a temporary full time appointment of one year with the perspective of prolongation with another 3 years. The gross salary starts with € 1,956.- per month in the first year and increases to € 2,502.- per month in the fourth year of employment (salary scale “P” Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities).
