REU summer fellowship, Marine Ecology

A Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer fellowship is open at the Marine Science Institute, University of California Santa Barbara. Duration is 12 weeks, June 3-Aug 29, although these dates can be somewhat flexible to accommodate academic schedules. We invite applications from qualified, highly motivated undergraduate students from U.S. colleges/universities to participate in a 12-week lab and field based summer research experience. U.S. citizenship is required.

The student will be involved with an NSF-funded project on the use of particulate organic matter by marine suspension feeders. The main objective of the project is to determine the relative importance of phytoplankton and kelp detritus to the diet of benthic suspension feeders on reefs off the California coast. The student will learn ecological and biochemical methods to explore this topic, and will be required to write a report, in the format of a scientific paper, and give a presentation on their project at the end of the summer. Travel costs to and from UCSB will be covered, and the student will be provided with a $500/week stipend for living expenses. This is a full-time commitment and any work or educational activities outside the program must be approved.

You are eligible if you are an undergraduate student who has completed at least two years of study towards a bachelor's degree, and you will still be an undergraduate in the fall after the summer program. Students from underrepresented groups and institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply. Experience with scientific diving is desirable but not required. Impacts of climate and land-use on food-web structure and energy Flow in prairie lakes

I am looking for two highly motivated graduate students at the MSc or PhD level to take on two new projects related to food-web structure and energy flow in prairie lakes. Prairie lakes are extremely dynamic and diverse systems. At the same time these lakes are very susceptible to multiple stressors including climate, land use, and management practices. Future projects will include whole-lake experiments to study the interactions of increasing salinity and fish predation. As part of this study, metabolic activity will be assessed by analyzing concentrations and stable isotopes of dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic carbon to quantify the relative importance of climate and land-use for the increasing frequency of winterkill in prairie lakes.

Students with an interest in aquatic ecology and stable isotope technology are encouraged to apply. The successful applicants are expected to participate in field collections and laboratory analyses, including microscopy and stable isotope analysis. Financial support of $18,000 yr-1 will be provided though a combination of research and teaching assistantships. Starting date of the positions is negotiable, but will be no later than fall 2011.

Topic: The PhD study investigates fluid mixing and transport around swimming zooplankton organisms using particle image velocimetry and laser-induced fluorescence techniques. A graduate student position in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is available within the Marchetti Lab, specializing in the ecophysiology and molecular biology of marine phytoplankton.

The candidate will conduct laboratory and field experiments investigating the development of molecular indicators to determine the physiological status of a variety of marine phytoplankton. Environmental factors to be tested include variations in nutrient and trace metal concentrations and light as well as other parameters that will be influenced by future climate change.

The University of Florida Water Institute seeks applicants for up to 6 Ph.D. Fellows to join an interdisciplinary team working on complex, emerging issues related to nutrient dynamics, management and policy in watersheds. The 4-year fellowships include a $25,000 stipend, tuition waiver and health insurance.

Fellows will explore interdisciplinary research issues affecting watershed management in the face of EPA’s new nutrient criteria for Florida waters. The Zooplankton Ecology Lab at LSU has an immediate opening for a graduate student to pursue an M.S. degree in a NOAA-funded research program to digitize the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) zooplankton sample collection.

The thesis research project will focus on the impact of changes in the copepod prey assemblage available to juvenile tunas. Using SEAMAP data, you will explore how differences in copepod size and taxa vary with the intensity of the Loop Current and how such fluctuations are related to fluctuations in the abundances of juvenile tunas. MSc projects on coastal watershed nitrogen cycling and phycotoxicity at Université de Moncton, campus de Shippagan

An MSc position will be available starting summer 2010 to conduct one of the following projects.

1)Nitrogen fixation and denitrification along coastal rivers of New Brunswick. Estuaries are thought to act as net sinks of nitrogen, thereby preventing terrestrial nitrogen from reaching coastal waters where it may otherwise lead to eutrophication. However, it remains unclear how the relative importance of nitrogen fixation (source) and denitrification (sink) change within watersheds along the hydrological gradient and among watersheds characterized by different land uses. This project will involve river sampling, estimates of nitrogen fixation and denitrification, and models of nitrogen flux to quantify the basic nitrogen cycle at the interface of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.

2)Paleoecological rectonstruction of water quality and algal productivity of coastal waters. In addition to increasing nitrogen inputs from terrestrial systems, coastal zones have experienced mixed signals from both anthropogenic activities (urbanization, agriculture, forestry, mining) and natural phenomena (climatic, hydrologic variability) that may have contributed in part to the recent increases in toxic blooms frequency. Sediment cores will be collected from selected New Brunswick estuaries and analyzed for historical changes in isotopic content (N source) and biological fossils (production) to quantify the relative importance of anthropogenic (manageable) and natural (unmanageable) factors in controlling coastal ecosystem health.

Qualifications: BSc in biology, environmental science or related discipline. Ability to follow courses in French.

Stipend: a $17,500/year stipend is available for the successful applicant.

We look for students interested in performing a PhD Thesis at the Marine Biology and Oceanography Department of the Institut de Ciències del Mar de Barcelona. We offer an FPI fellowship (beca predoctoral de Formación del Personal Investigador by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación), linked to the project "ECOALFACS: ECOlogical mechanisms controlling (harmful) phytoplankton blooms in ALFACS Bay (Ebro Delta), CTM2009-09581, PI: E. Berdalet". The Thesis will be advised by Drs. Marta Estrada and Elisa Berdalet.

The general objective of the Thesis is to investigate some biological aspects that modulate the phytoplankton dynamics in Alfacs Bay, and in particular of harmful species. Namely, the research will include: a) the estimations of in situ phytoplankton growth rates and of the grazing pressure by microzooplankton, b) the potential role of mixotrophy on the selective proliferation of certain phytoplankton assemblages and/or harmful species and c) the significance of the preferential vertical location of some (harmful) phytoplankton species linked to their migratory behaviour. Optical microscopy, flow cytometry, image analysis with FlowCam and HPLC techniques will be used.

Ph.D. opportunity in benthic nitrogen cycling for Fall 2010.

Application deadline is Feb 26, 2010. We have space available in the Biogeochemistry Lab that currently has active projects in Weeks Bay Alabama, and Toolik Lake Alaska. Our work focuses on effects of climate change on trace gas fluxes, and how eutrophication affects coastal regions. The successful applicant will work on elucidating spatial and temporal patterns in nitrogen cycling in coastal waters located within the vicinity of Dauphin Island, a barrier island in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The initial work will focus on using membrane inlet mass spectrometry to detect rates of denitrification.

Future work may involve tracing sources and utilization of nitrogen in coastal waters. The assistantship will include (1) a tuition waiver, (2) an annual stipend and (3) health insurance.

Within the EU-funded project FORCE (Future Of Reefs in a Changing Environment), the research group Aquatic Microbiology has a vacancy for a:

PhD student in Phytoplankton Ecology

The FORCE project aims to understand the ultimate and proximate causes of change in Caribbean coral reef ecosystems. Eutrophication through runoff of terrestrial nutrients into coastal waters may cause a shift from coral dominance to macroalgae. However, the role of phytoplankton in absorbing nutrients has largely been under-appreciated. Phytoplankton often responds rapidly to changes in nutrient availability and may utilise much of the terrestrial nutrients, rendering them unavailable to corals and macroalgae. To date, nutrient thresholds indicating problematic levels of eutrophication of coral reefs have been proposed, but their relevance is questionable. Our study will investigate how the nutrient influx is allocated over phytoplankton, macroalgae and corals to obtain a better understanding of the impacts of eutrophication on coral reefs.

Fieldwork will consist of water sampling, chemical and biological analyses, underwater surveys, and aquarium experiments. The fieldwork (18-24 months) will be primarily conducted at the Carmabi Institute on Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, and at some other Caribbean locations. Preparation for field work, laboratory and statistical analyses, and writing of manuscripts will be done at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The successful candidate has: an MSc in marine biology, aquatic ecology, or related biological field; experience with fieldwork; experience in (scientific) teamwork; proven writing ability in English; preference will be given to applicants who have experience with the ecology of phytoplankton, or macroalgae, or coral reefs; a valid driver's license and open water SCUBA certificate.

The NSF-funded Christina Basin Critical Zone Observatory (CRB-CZO, http://www.udel.edu/czo) – a collaborative and multi-scale research effort among the University of Delaware (www.udel.edu), the Stroud Water Research Center(www.stroudcenter.org), and the Delaware Environmental Institute (www.udel.edu/denin) – has openings for 8 Ph.D. students.

The CRB-CZO focuses on the properties of carbon-mineral complexes and the impacts of weathering, erosion, and fluvial network dynamics on the formation and sequestration of these complexes in watersheds with mixed land uses.

Individual students will have a primary mentor/advisor, but the CRB-CZO research program fosters and encourages collaboration among the Ph.D. students, 3 post doctoral scientists working on the project, and senior investigators. We anticipate that student training will benefit from working with multiple investigators within the research team. CRB-CZO scientists have expertise in hydrology, soil physics, biogeochemistry, organic geochemistry, geomorphology, and ecosystem science, and modeling.

More than mud: how will disruption of soft-sediments threaten coastal biodiversity? (ref 2010090)

Based in the Coastal Ecology Group, Department of Biological Sciences and Climate Risk CORE, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

A PhD student is sought to contribute to an Australian Research Council funded project investigating how climate change and human activity are acting upon the total supply and mix of detrital resources that fuel bottom-dwelling organisms and the productive fisheries that they support. They will use large-scale field experiments to determine how disturbance of estuarine ecosystems influences detrital pathways of nutrition. Outcomes of this research will help prevent economic and ecological losses caused by eutrophication of Australia's estuaries.

We are looking for two MS students interested in aquatic ecology or limnology through our Water Science Masters program. Both are paid research assistantships and would be through Murray State University's Hancock Biological Station on Kentucky Lake. Students would have the option of residing at the Biological Station, about 15 miles from the main campus.

Both students would assist with deployment of lake environmental sensors and bi-weekly monitoring cruises through an NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure grant. Specific thesis research areas would be based on each student's interests and the Station's ongoing research programs. These might include but are not limited to analysis of sensor data, zooplankton ecology and invasive species, lake algae, zebra mussels and native mussel species, the effects of water level fluctuations, and lake benthos dynamics. In the later case, the benthos of Kentucky Lake is quickly disappearing but the reasons for it remain unclear.

Opportunity for PhD research in the field of environmental bio-optics at SYKE (Helsinki, Finland)

The Marine Research Centre of the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) conducts wide-ranging research on the open Baltic Sea and Finnish coastal waters. Three research programmes focus on the state of the sea environment, marine ecosystems, and ecology and biodiversity. The Academy of Finland will finance a 3-yr PhD-student appointment in our cross-disciplinary bio-optical research team. The student will mainly work on the project ‘Bioluminescence in the Baltic Sea: exploring the potential of night-time optical markers for optical-taxonomical classification of harmful dinoflagellate blooms’. We will attempt to chart the occurrence of dinoflagellate blooms in the Baltic Sea, based on their specific optical properties including their night-time bioluminescence. The project further includes genetic screening of cultured dinoflagellates for the presence of bioluminescence genes, the development of a prototype bioluminescence recorder for use in automated measurement systems, and upscaling findings to the scale of satellite observations of phytoplankton biomass.

The PhD-student will be trained and supported by our research teams with experience in dinoflagellate ecology and genetics, optical modelling, and remote sensing, both in the field and in the laboratory. The candidate is expected to contribute to field work onboard our research vessels Aranda and Muikku.

The PhD student will be advised by Drs. Stefan Simis, Seppo Kaitala, and Anke Kremp working in the Marine Research Laboratory, located on the Kumpula campus in Helsinki, Finland.

Qualifications: M.Sc. degree in biology/ecology/biophysics and a keen interest in environmental monitoring, methods development, and laboratory bases studies. Oral and written English at academic level. Ross Sea phytoplankton physiology and iron biogeochemistry

Research assistantships with full stipends ($26-33K) and tuition waivers are available for students interested in pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in phytoplankton physiology, molecular ecology, and/or trace metal – microbe interactions. Students will join an active group working on several NSF-funded initiatives focusing on the metal physiology and biogeochemistry of marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria. We have been recently funded to investigate Fe cycling and phytoplankton molecular ecology off the coast of Antarctica. This four-year multi-institutional project (Rutgers-Newark & New Brunswick, Princeton, Woods Hole, and U Hawai’i) is focused on understanding the links between Fe and phytoplankton in the Ross Sea, Antarctica.

Lab work will be conducted at the Rutgers University campuses in Newark (Earth and Environmental Sciences) and New Brunswick (Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences). The successful candidate is also expected to participate in a 4-week field research expedition to the Ross Sea aboard the R/V Palmer in January – February 2011.

Dam removal projects are becoming an increasingly popular way to restore the habitats of depleted fisheries and river ecosystems. Rivers are the major source of sediment to the ocean, and dams act to block this sediment from reaching the nearshore, potentially causing beach erosion and loss of marine habitat. But we do not understand the full range of effects our “restoration” will have. For example, what will happen when the impounded sediment is free to flow downstream into the ocean? Will the sediment behave as a benefit by nourishing local beaches or a hindrance through the burial of critical habitats?

This research apprenticeship focuses on designing and performing baseline studies prior to dam removal on the Elwha River. Students will evaluate the impacts of the existing dams on the nearshore environment, as well as the impacts of dam removal.

Apprentices will:

. participate in an oceanographic research cruise to the Elwha River mouth and collect data for their research project.

. have the opportunity to design and conduct laboratory experiments.

. take weekly field trips to a range of environments from the source region of the Elwha River (Olympic Mountains) to coastal sedimentary environments (e.g., local tidal flats and the Skagit River delta).

Students will gain an understanding of the range of sedimentary processes that occur near river mouths throughout the Pacific NW. This knowledge allows scientists to predict hazardous material transport, shoreline erosion and accretion, and changes in seabed habitats due to dam installation and removal. With a decline in traditional harvests, several exploratory fisheries are being conducted to determine if certain underutilized species would be commercially sustainable. At the forefront of emerging fisheries in Atlantic Canada is the orange-footed sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa). With the fishery poised to enter the commercial phase in the near future, developing a sustainable management strategy becomes a priority. The proposed study aims to elucidate key biological aspects of C. frondosa which are not only significant from an ecological viewpoint but will also provide managers with the tools to develop appropriate management strategies by filling important gaps in the existing knowledge. A Ph.D. position is available through the Canadian Rivers Institute at the University of New Brunswick (UNB Fredericton) to study the impacts of multiple stressors on fluvial environments and aquatic communities in agricultural watersheds. Agricultural activities can cause excessive sedimentation, eutrophication and agro-chemical contamination of surface waters. However, the interactive effects of these stressors and the potential for cumulative impacts is poorly understood.

Research tools and techniques that are available include a stable isotope laboratory, experimental stream mesocosms, and stream monitoring infrastructure across a series of watersheds in the potato belt near Grand Falls, New Brunswick.

The Ph.D. project is a key component of strategic collaboration between Environment Canada, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Canadian Rivers Institute. Primary funding is provided by AAFC’s Sustainable Agriculture Environmental Systems (SAGES) program. Graduate Assistantship/Invasive quagga mussels in the arid southwest

An assistantship towards a Master degree of Public Health (MPH) is available in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). The candidate will work with federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as other research teams to monitor the life histories of quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis) adults and veligers in Lake Mead and address the key environmental factors affecting these invasive mussels in this largest reservoir in the US (by volume). Invasive quagga mussels were discovered in Lake Mead on January 6, 2007. It is the first known occurrence of the dreissenid species in the western United States. Now it has been found in many ecosystems in the arid southwest region.

The final candidate needs to do field work to collect water and sediment samples in Lake Mead, summarize water quality data, enumerate quagga mussel veligers and adults, identify and count benthic samples, present research results in interagency meetings, and draft report to funding agencies. The funding is available for 2 years. Minimum requirements include 1) a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Biology, Limnology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or related field; 2) good physical condition; 3) safe driving history; 4) self-motivated personality; 5) working independently and interactively with a multidisciplinary team.

The Geology and Ecology Units at the University of Oviedo, in Oviedo, Northwest Spain, invite applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to conduct research on carbon acquisition strategies of marine algae, as part of a larger EC-funded project assessing precedents of algal adaptation to atmospheric CO2 levels in the geological record. Familiarity with other standard analytical techniques (e.g., nutrients, dissolved and particulate organic C, N and P, dissolved oxygen and CO2, alkalinity, etc.) in freshwater and marine systems, as well as with organic separations and characterization and/or microbial ecological methods, is desirable. The Department of Biology is offering one to two 12-16 month postdoctoral fellowships in freshwater biology, with a compulsory start date anytime during 2009. We are looking for highly qualified non-Swedish applicants within the field of freshwater biology, whose research fits in well with ongoing research at the Department. The applicant will have access to a newly-built, 250 m2 aquarium facility, equipped with aquaria and replicate artificial streams. Research at the Department is focused on freshwater biology and conservation biology in forest landscapes. Faculty are currently studying questions concerning fragmented landscapes, interactions between the riparian zone and stream communities, fish migrations, fish passage and stocking problems associated with stream regulation, rare species (river pearl mussel), winter ecology of fish, ecophysiology of fish and hydrological restoration. Five graduate student assistantships in ecological stoichiometry of detrital food webs

Five graduate student assistantships (3 Ph.D. and 2 M.S.) are available as part of a newly funded project examining the responses of detritus-based stream food webs to concentrations and ratios of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus. Two Ph.D. positions will be based at the University of Georgia and will focus on detrital carbon dynamics and responses of predatory salamanders, respectively. A third Ph.D. position will be based at the University of Alabama and will examine macroinvertebrate food web responses. Graduate Student Position in Invasive Ascidian Tunicate Research

A position is available immediately for a graduate student to conduct thesis research on the population ecology and genetics of invasive ascidian tunicates in Newfoundland coastal waters. The student will conduct field work on the population dynamics of invasive ascidians using a variety of molecular techniques, such as DNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequencing and sequence analysis, to develop species-specific molecular probes and quantitative PCR assays for native and invasive ascidians. While we are most interested in candidates for the Ph.D. degree, we will consider exceptional candidates at the M.Sc. level as well. An MSc is required for the Ph.D. position in either Biology, Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Ecology, Molecular Biology or Genetics. The students will join a research team working on the genetics and population dynamics of invasive ascidians in Newfoundland. This work is highly relevant to scientific and management concerns of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and will be done in collaboration with DFO scientists.

Two years ago, we discovered several species of invasive ascidians living in several Newfoundland harbours. Our continuing survey work is adding to our knowledge of the geographic distribution of these species on the Newfoundland coast. Invasive ascidians are a major threat to species diversity globally and to the economic viability of aquaculture farms both in Canada and abroad. Our work has resulted in the first report of invasive ascidians in Newfoundland, and one of our objectives is to obtain the scientific knowledge required to anticipate the potential for further invasion and to know when and where to apply mitigation measures.

PhD researcher in Climate modeling on orbital timescales (1,0 fte)

Job description

In this project we aim to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of orbital climate forcing, going from geological timescales to causal links.

Many climate records reflect the principal orbital cycles, which are associated with variations in the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit, the angle between the orbital plane and the equator (obliquity) and the date of perihelion (precession). These cycles are routinely applied to construct so-called astronomical timescales for the late Neogene (i.e. the last 14 million years). In this project we will perform climate model experiments in order to test different hypotheses on the causal links between astronomical forcing and climate signals in sedimentary records.

Hypothesized links are tropical monsoons, mid-latitude storm tracks and the large-scale ocean circulation. We will use state-of-the-art climate models, including a representation of the terrestrial biosphere and coupled off-line to a hydrological model of river discharge. Model results will be compared to data in collaboration with another PhD student who works in a matching project, which is part of the 7th EU framework ITN-GTSnext program. There will be a close collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) for the modelling work.

The project involves scientists at Utrecht University, KNMI, University of Amsterdam, and various European research groups. Funding is provided by the Focus and Mass program of the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a MSc or equivalent degree in Climate or Atmospheric Sciences, Physical Oceanography, Physical Geography, Physics, Mathematics or related field. Experience, or a strong interest, in climate modeling and programming on UNIX-based computer systems is desirable. He/she communicates easily in English, both verbally and in writing, and has an interest in interdisciplinary research.

Terms of employment

We offer a PhD position (1,0 fte) with an initial 12 month contract. After a positive evaluation this contract can be extended to a maximum of 36 more months (a total of four years maximum) and with the specific intent that it results in a doctorate within this period. The salary for a full time appointment starts at € 2,042 and increases to € 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year of the appointment.

Modeling Ocean Biogeochemistry in the mid-Cretaceous: reconstructing the nutrient-biosphere-climate link

Massive amounts of organic matter were buried in ocean sediments during mid-Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs). As yet, a quantitative understanding of the mechanisms and feedbacks responsible for the perturbation of the oxygen, carbon and nutrient cycles around OAEs is still lacking. In this project, general circulation modeling for the global ocean will be used to elucidate the triggers for global ocean anoxia during the Cenomanian/Turonian (C/T) boundary event (~94 Myrs BP). In particular, the role of changes in riverine inputs and upwelling intensity in determining nutrient availability and oxygen conditions in the Atlantic ocean will be addressed.

PhD position in limnology, aquatic biogeochemistry At the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the Evolutionary Biology Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Water and Environmental Studies, Linköping University, Sweden, and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, University of British Columbia, Canada.

The successful applicant will work within a project about natural halogenation of aquatic organic matter and its possible consequences for the recalcitrance of organic matter. There is increasing evidence of wide spread natural formation of halogenated organic matter in terrestrial and marine environments, but freshwaters environments are poorly understood in this regard. Further, theoretical knowledge about chlorination processes suggest that some of the halogenated organic material can become more resistant to degradation. Hence, halogenation could be one key to increase our understanding of organic matter recalcitrance and long term preservation in sediments which is of importance for the global carbon cycle. Our lab’s research focuses on environmental controls regulating the formation and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in prairie wetlands. Water MeHg concentrations can be extremely high in some Type 3 wetland ponds in Saskatchewan and preliminary data suggest that there may be an influence of land use type on MeHg concentrations in water. Wetlands surrounded by land that has been converted to natural grasslands tend to have elevated concentrations of MeHg compared water in wetlands that are cultivated by traditional farming methods. We have also observed very high concentrations of MeHg in water from wetlands ponds surrounded by organically farmed areas. I currently have 1-2 graduate student positions at the M.Sc. or Ph.D. levels available in a new ecosystem-level research initiative examining ecological controls on methylmercury production in prairie wetlands. This position involves both laboratory studies at the University of Regina and field work at the St. Denis National Wildlife Area 40 km east of Saskatoon. I am looking for bright, independent, highly motivated students with a passion for environmental research. We are seeking for an excellent postgraduate student in order to lead an exciting PhD projet on great perialpine lakes biogeochemistry. This project is part of a pluridisciplinar research program involving sedimentologists, biologists and ecologists in a federative approach aiming at better understanding the effect of three main human perturbations on perialpine lake ecosystems : fish introduction, nutrient pollution, climatic change. This program is founded by the French National Research Agency (ANR).

The PhD project will consist in studying the evolution of phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) biogeochemical cycles over the last 150 years in the 4 greatest French perialpine lakes (Annecy, Bourget, Leman, Aiguebelette). High resolution sedimentological and geochemical methods will be applied to reconstruct such evolutions (cf. Giguet-Covex et al., JOPL 2009, DOI 10.1007/s10933-009-9324-9 for details).

The successful applicant should have a MSc in geoscience, biology or ecology with excellent quotations. He/She must be autonomous to lead his/her research project and have skills in geochemistry. A strong interest in pluridisciplinar work is needed.

Thousands of Filipino workers could be hired in the construction of new military bases on the US territory of Guam, the island's governor said during a visit to the Philippines.

Guam will be hiring between 10,000 and 15,000 workers to support the US military buildup, including the relocation of 8,000 Marines and their families from Okinawa over the next few years, Gov. Felix Camacho told reporters in Manila on Tuesday.

He said he expected skilled Filipino workers to fill job demands that cannot be met by local labor alone.

"It is not exclusive but the likelihood is that most will be from the Philippines," Camacho said. Chinese workers will not be hired because of security concerns related to work on military bases, he said.

The buildup will cost at least $15 billion. Japan is covering $6 billion of the bill.

US Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii said last week that foreign workers won't be allowed to do more than 30 percent of the work on the projects.

The 2010 National Defense Authorization Act requires the minimum wage for all Guam construction projects be at the prevailing wage level for similar work in Hawaii, he said.

The Legal Governance Concentration of Research Excellence (CORE) in Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University, is offering a full time PhD Scholarship investigating the role of legal and constitutional arrangements in shaping migration in the Pacific region. The successful applicant will join an innovative team of researchers at Macquarie Law School who are undertaking inter-disciplinary research on contemporary issues of legal governance.

Migration is a phenomenon of great importance to the Pacific region: proportionate to the size of their home populations, no other region of the world has experienced larger outflows of people. This project will examine the links between Pacific migration and colonisation, which has left a complex legacy of legal and political associations in the Pacific. As the process of decolonisation has unfolded, colonial powers (such as Australia, France, New Zealand, UK and US) have made different arrangements for the governance of Pacific territories. This project will examine the impact of these legal and constitutional arrangements on migration within the Pacific, and between Pacific Island Countries and the Pacific Rim, during critical periods of colonisation and

Job Description:

The Coastal Biological Oceanography Laboratory is seeking a research intern to work at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) from August 2009 until April 2010 (possibly extended through July 2010).

We are looking for an earnest individual who will assist in ongoing research both in coastal North Carolina and the northern Gulf of Mexico. This MARFIN-funded research seeks to evaluate the nursery-role of inshore seagrass meadows for estuarine and offshore fishery species (drums, snappers, and groupers). The intern position involves use of a variety of experimental techniques both in the lab and in the field. The lab work will include preparing fish otoliths for elemental fingerprinting to retroactively assess the nursery origin(s) of individual adult fishes. The fieldwork involves caging experiments to evaluate juvenile fish growth and survival, and surveying fish communities via trawling. Since the Coastal Biological Oceanography Laboratory is new (DOB = July 1, 2009), the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with the principal investigator and current graduate students on all projects. Additionally, the intern will have the chance to interact with researchers outside the Coastal Biological Oceanography Laboratory at IMS, as well as with researchers at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. IMS hosts weekly seminars by local or visiting researchers, which the intern will also have the opportunity to participate in during their stay. We prefer someone who has recently graduated with an undergraduate degree in biology, marine science or ecology, and plans to pursue a graduate degree in a related field. We conduct research on fish and bivalve population ecology, with emphasis on: 1) connectivity of marine populations and ecosystems; 2) complex trophic interactions in marine communities; 3) ecosystem function in relation to habitat quality, availability and utilization; and 4) long-term community patterns. This involves a broad range of ecological/oceanographic concepts (e.g., recruitment processes and mechanisms, intraguild predation, restoration ecology). To date, research tools have included manipulative field experiments, intensive field surveys, GIS simulations, ROVs, stable isotope analyses, population projection matrix models and trace element fingerprinting. Research sites have ranged from the intertidal to depths of 4000 m, covering many of the habitats in between.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to undertake research in coastal soft sediments ecosystems that will lead to a PhD. Potential areas of interest include quantifying/modelling relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function, benthic-pelagic coupling and benthic food webs. The successful candidate will have an MSc or BSc(Hons), ideally in marine ecology, biogeochemistry or mathematics. However, background is less important than a strong interest ecology and good quantitative/modelling skills. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to assist in rocky intertidal research on the Oregon Coast. The marine ecology research focuses include mussel and barnacle larval recruitment and settlement, community ecology, and species interactions projects. This position involves both lab and field work. The lab work will include counting samples at a stereo microscope. The field work activities will involve hiking to field sites, climbing on coastal cliffs with heavy equipment and working on rocky exposed shores. The individual must be willing to work early mornings or late nights, some weekends, and some overnight stays at field sites.

• Able to work hard and fast in demanding situations

Autonomous voltametric and potentiometric sensors: toward long-term monitoring of sulphur dynamics at redox-interfaces

Under the frame of the European Community Initial Training Network SENSENET, we are seeking a candidate for a PhD with a background in analytical chemistry/marine chemistry/ biogeochemistry, or sensor development in environmental science and technology.
The PhD will be hosted at the Oceanological Observatory of Banyuls-sur-Mer, a marine station from the University of Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris 6 (UPMC) (http://www.obs-banyuls.fr). Candidate should be preferentially EC-resident (excluding French) and should have stayed less than 9 months in France in the past 5 years.

The project aims to further develop in situ electrochemical methods for the monitoring of deep and shallow marine environments. Electrochemical techniques have proven to be particularly relevant for the monitoring of dynamic redox interfaces (e.g.: sulphidic sediments associated with hydrothermal vents, methane seeps or organic matter degradation), but they still need improvement for long-term use.

The work will be based on recently validated in situ autonomous sensors for reduced sulphur species. The objective is to improve current voltammetric and potentiometric methods and electrode design to optimize measurement temporal stability. Validation of the methods will be performed on field-test stations at variable depth. Implementation of the sensor in various sulphide-rich marine environments (mangrove swamp, shallow waters sediments in the Baltic and deep-sea hydrothermal environments) is also planned.

The Electronic Instrumentation research group at Victoria University of Wellington was recently awarded funds for the development of new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technologies. We are now looking for a suitable PhD student to assist with this work. The research grant provides a three year NZ $27,000 per annum tax free scholarship as well as tuition fees.

The Project
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is a relatively new sensing technology that has yet to be applied to the everyday world. One of the barriers to adoption is the complexity of the method and the sophistication, size and cost of the supporting electronics. The aim of this project is to continue the development of compact high performance systems by taking advantage of new FPGA, sampling and signal processing technologies. More specifically we wish to design a high performance band-pass sampling digital NMR receiver where traditional RF techniques are replaced by new signal processing methods. The student will be required to research and design stable and low jitter frequency references for wide band analogue to digital conversion and to research, design, model and implement optimal digital receiver architectures for NMR applications. The work will be undertaken within the School of Engineering and Computer Science but with close collaboration with Professor Paul Callaghan’s NMR group in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences and Magritek Ltd.

An M.S. research assistantship is available in Alan Wilson’s lab ( http://www.wilsonlab.com ) at Auburn University (AU) to study basic and applied limnology/aquatic ecology. Current lab research projects revolve around understanding the ecological and genetic mechanisms mediating harmful cyanobacterial blooms and include an NSF-funded project focused on elucidating the ecosystem-level consequences of food-web evolution. Students in my lab are welcome to participate on existing projects but are strongly encouraged to develop their own thesis projects using a suite of approaches available at AU including field limnocorral and whole-pond experiments, large-scale lake surveys, and laboratory-based mechanistic studies. Travel opportunities to international scientific conferences, as well as field sites throughout the Southeast and Midwest are made available to all of my students.

The ideal candidate will be hard-working, enjoy teamwork, have a solid foundation in aquatic ecology, molecular biology, microbiology, or related fields, and have good grades (GPA > 3.2) and competitive GRE scores (quantitative and verbal above 50th percentile and writing of 4.0 or greater). Background: The projects aims to analyse the impact of climate change on the adaptability and changes in the feeding behaviour of littoral fish populations at their northern and southern distribution limits (cold- and warm-adapted species). The climate-related distribution and adaptation patterns of fish key species in the littoral zones along the costs of Western Europe will be assessed Within the part project „Trophic Ecology“ changes in the trophic levels, the niche width and their adaptability to potential changes in prey spectra in relation to climate warming should be analysed along latitudinal gradients. The project will include extensive field studies as well as laboratory experiments on the adaptive potential of fish species and changes in the metabolic pathways under elevated temperature conditions.

Tasks: Within this project extensive field studies on the trophic ecology of key fish species along latitudinal gradients should be carried out (Western European shoreline from Portugal to Norway). In addition, laboratory experiments with different littoral fish species from different origin will be conducted. Based on stable isotope and fatty acid analyses the trophic position and the niche width of key fish species will be analysed. In addition, laboratory experiments will be conducted in order to analyse changes in fatty acid metabolisms and stable isotope fractionation under elevated temperature regimes.

Requirements: A profound knowledge in experimental ecology and fish taxonomy is required. Background: The ecosystem North Sea has undergone severe change in the last decades, but we still know fairly little on the effect of global and regional change on the pelagic component of the ecosystem. Changes in the phytoplankton and the zooplankton at the base of the food web might have strong consequences for production of higher trophic levels. This project aims to elucidate the changes in interactions that have taken place in the pelagic ecosystem of the North Sea. To this end, several long-time series will be combined and analysed.

Tasks: Within this project the first task will be to collect the data available for the North Sea and store them in a common format and database. Some of these data will need to be quality controlled, before they can be used for analysis. Using state-of-the-art analytical techniques the successful candidate will then concentrate on the changes that have taken place in the phytoplankton-zooplankton interface.

Requirements: Successful candidates have a diploma or master degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, marine science or statistics. Paleotemperature reconstructions are of utmost importance for understanding the underlying mechanisms of past climate changes. Continental temperature reconstructions, however, are hampered by a lack of quantitative temperature proxies. Recently, the BGC group at NIOZ developed a new continental temperature proxy (MBT/CBT index), which is based on the distribution of membrane lipids of soil bacteria. These lipids are transported from land to the ocean by rivers and deposited in marine sediments. The PhD project is part of the “PACEMAKER” project, recently funded by an ERC Advanced Grant. The task of the PhD student in this project is to study the transport mechanisms of soil bacterial membrane lipids to the ocean in diverse river systems, such as the Amazon and the Rio de la Plata (South America). The appointed PhD student will participate in a cruise planned in 2010 off Rio de la Plata (SW Atlantic) and in various land field trips to collect marine sediments, soils, and river water samples.

Phosphorus dynamics and benthic photosynthesis

Job description. Within the Sea and Coast Programme of the Dutch funding agency NWO, the NIOZ and the Netherlands Institute for Ecology (NIOO-CEME) will conduct a study on phosphorus (P) as a limiting factor for primary production in the western Wadden Sea, coordinated by Dr. J. Kromkamp (NIOO). The sediment is a large repository for phosphorus and considered an important P-source for primary production. Previous studies indicate that benthic phototrophic communities modulate sediment P-release directly via selective uptake, or indirectly by changing the chemistry of surficial sediments as a consequence of their metabolic activity. The (re-)distribution of phosphorus between the water column and sediment is hypothesized to control the productivity and species composition of both microphytobenthos and phytoplankton communities. As a consequence it may direct the carbon and energy flows and structure the foodweb in the western Wadden Sea from the very basis. Applying geochemical approaches during field surveys, the candidate will assess the contribution of sediment-P in supporting benthic and pelagic primary production. In addition, the candidate will develop a dynamic biogeochemical model, focusing on the dynamics of water-nutrient exchange and the modulating role of microphytobenthos populations.

Topic: Observational and theoretical study of the equatorial boundary layer

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a Msc in Physical Oceanography, physics or a related subject.

Observations show that dynamically the ocean differs distinctly in a narrow zone of ±1o near the equator compared to off-equatorial regions. This zone is not only dominated by strong, vertically alternating zonal currents that inhibit cross-equatorial transport, but also its stratification, mixing, internal wave climate and biological diversity differ widely. Global ocean and climate models often give a very simplified picture of many processes in this band, and particularly those of small-scale are badly represented, if at all. This is partly due to lack of spatial observational resolution. The consequence is that the predictive value of these models is limited. In particular, neither the choking effect of this band of zonal currents on the meridional transport of heat, in the Atlantic Ocean of relevance to Western European climate, nor its variation under climate change is known.
Geometric focusing of small-scale internal waves, traditionally neglected, might have an important effect on the dynamics of the equatorial zone, which we aim to illuminate by (1) in situ measurements of physical and acoustic fields along a cross-equatorial transect; (2) use of satellite data; (3) comparison to theoretical and numerical model predictions; and (4) development of these models.
The emphasis is on understanding (1) the strong and strongly varying equatorial current pattern; (2) the role of small-scale but intensive internal waves; (3) the role of geometric focusing of internal waves on the vertical transport and distribution of heat, momentum and particles (‘acoustic scatterers’); and (4) the possible consequences thereof for the meridional transport of heat and changes therein due to global climate change. The strategy will be to search latitudinally for coherent patterns in underwater physical and acoustic parameters, combining them with surface meteorological and remote sensing data.

Position details:
The PhD project aims at a quantitative and process-based understanding of the flux paths of
dissolved oxygen and nutrients in managed rivers. The relevant sources, sinks and transport rates, e.g. sediment-water fluxes, will be investigated as a function of discharge, turbulence and temperature stratification using state of the art measurement techniques.
This interdisciplinary study is integrated into the BfG project KLIWAS (Consequences of climate
change for navigable waterways and options for the economy and inland navigation) and the
emerging research theme Land-Water Ecotones at the Institute for Environmental Sciences.

PhD Greenhouse gas emission from subarctic lakes

A full time PhD position is available within the project ‘Greenhouse Gas Emission from Lakes in Northern Permafrost Areas: Quantitative Importance and Climate Impacts’. Climate change and thawing of permafrost causes mobilization and decomposition of old carbon stocks from high latitude soils and, hence, releases significant amounts of greenhouse gases(CO2, CH4) to the atmosphere. Data now show that permafrost thawing can also increase the export and decomposition of terrestrial organic carbon stocks in lakes, implying a substantial flux of terrestrial organic carbon to the atmosphere. The project will quantify the importance of lakes and streams for the mineralization of terrestrial organic carbon and the subsequent release of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere in regions of melting permafrost. The project will be carried out in the mountain region in subarctic northern Sweden and includes measurements of carbon fluxes in lakes and streams and experimental studies of how thawing of permafrost affect decomposition of terrestrial organic carbon in lakes.

PhD students normally spend 90% of the year to their studies/research, also taking part in other work at the department, doing 10% teaching (or administrative duties); the position will then last for 4 years and 5
months.

The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7). The Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP) has an opening for a Marine Technician for a temporary duration of six months over the summer from approximately April to October.

CMOP operates fixed stations (underwater environmental monitoring) in the Lower Columbia River Estuary and the Pacific Ocean from a field station in Astoria, Oregon. This position is located in Astoria, Oregon.

This position will assist with the field operations, to include: calibration and repair of oceanographic instrumentation; operating small open boats in estuary and coastal waters; scientific diving; participating in oceanographic research cruises lasting from one day to several weeks; construction of cables and mounting frames; maintenance of research vessel; appraising, processing, and analyzing of oceanographic data; and publication of data and findings from research activity.

Minimum qualifications include: high school diploma; 1st and 2nd year undergraduate courses in science or engineering discipline; BS or equivalent in oceanography, physical science, engineering or related subject preferred; experience with some fieldwork in environmental monitoring; experience with small vessel operation; physical ability for scientific diving (physical examination will be required); scientific diving qualifications preferred; and valid driver's license. PhD in Aquatic Ecotoxicology

A PhD position is available (ideally starting summer 2009) for a project investigating the relationships between the presence of environmental stressors (pesticides, light and temperature), the selection of freshwater cyanobacterial toxic strains, and the production of toxin and toxicity on zooplankton.
The objectives of the project are (i) to examine the interactive effects of environmental stressors on the physiology, population growth and toxicity of different species of cyanobacteria, (ii) to determine the effect of toxins on zooplankton, and (iii) to investigate the role of zooplankton in the control of cyanobacteria growth in the presence of different environmental stressors.
This project, part of a collaborative program between Canada and Mexico, will involve mainly laboratory research (physiological and biochemical assays, and competition experiments in microcosms and mesocosms).

An MSc degree in biological sciences or biochemistry is required. The ideal candidate will have some training in ecology, physiology, biochemistry and toxicology, and will be motivated to undertake research in aquatic ecosystem health.

Although, UQAM is a French speaking university, knowledge of French is not mandatory for this position. The ability to write in English is necessary.

MS students wanted as Fellows on NSF-funded program on Air-Land-River-Sea interactions and participate in K to 12 education.

Fellows will develop projects that address specific questions about the interactions among land use change, precipitation, river runoff, climate change, and the chemical and microbiological loading in rivers, and ultimately how all of those changes affect coastal biology and ocean circulation. Students are sought with expertise or interest in the following fields: biology (and all its subfields including microbiology, toxicology, genetics, molecular biology), physical oceanography, hydrology, remote sensing, GIS, numerical modeling, nutrient or chemical dynamics, marine biology (especially fish, invertebrates and algae), or ecology (terrestrial, aquatic or marine). Fellows can enroll in either the newly formed Department of Marine Science or Department of Biology. Duties include 15-20 hours per week in local schools developing place-based science activities with teachers and communicating your science project. Stipend is for one year at $30,000 and tuition waiver. One additional year of funding through this program may be awarded dependent on successful progress. Positions are available immediately for two graduate students to conduct thesis research on the population ecology and genetics of invasive ascidian tunicates in Newfoundland coastal waters. One of the students will conduct field work on the population dynamics of invasive ascidians (M.Sc.) and the other will use a variety of molecular techniques, such as DNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequencing and sequence analysis to develop species-specific molecular probes and quantitative PCR assays for native and invasive ascidians (Ph.D.). A B.Sc. is required for the M.Sc. position in either Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology or Biological Oceanography. An MSc is required for the Ph.D. position in either Biology, Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Ecology, Molecular Biology or Genetics. The students will join a research team working on the genetics and population dynamics of invasive ascidians in Newfoundland. This work is highly relevant to scientific and management concerns of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and will be done in collaboration with DFO scientists.

Two years ago, we discovered several species of invasive ascidians in several Newfoundland harbours, and our continued survey work is adding to our knowledge of the geographic distribution of these species on the Newfoundland coast. Invasive ascidians are a major threat to species diversity globally and to the economic viability of aquaculture farms both in Canada and abroad. Our work has resulted in the first report of invasive ascidians in Newfoundland, and one of our objectives is to obtain the scientific knowledge required to anticipate the potential for further invasion and to know when and where to apply mitigation measures.

MSc positions in Limnology / Stable Isotope Ecology

Two MSc student positions are being offered at the University of Regina (Canada) to take on projects that will be part of a larger research effort studying the impacts of climate and anthropogenic pollution on northern temperate lakes. The first project will concentrate on the effects of climate change and land use on food-web dynamics in prairie lakes. Special focus will be on the effects of salinity as global circulation models predict that increasing aridity will result in elevated salinities in many of these systems. This will have strong implications for biotic and abiotic interactions as well as for fisheries management strategies. The second project will compare pelagic communities and sediment biogeochemistry of drought-sensitive prairie lakes of southern Saskatchewan with pristine boreal lakes of northern Saskatchewan. Of special interest will be the potential for future acidification of these lakes because acid deposition is expected to increase due to excessive oil production in up-wind areas of the Alberta tar sands.

Students with an interest in aquatic ecology and stable isotope technology are encouraged to apply. Experience with lake food webs, stable isotope techniques and quantitative ecology will be an asset but is not required. Students are expected to participate in field collections and laboratory analyses, including microscopy and stable isotope analysis. Financial support ($15,000 p/a) will be provided through a combination of research grants and teaching assistantships. Speech Therapist

To deliver customized cost effective speech therapy services to meet patients' needs, and contribute positively to the building of staff's knowledge and skills in the area of speech therapy to aid and enhance patient management.

Requirements:

* Diploma in Speech Pathology or Bachelor Degree in Speech Pathology.
* Fresh graduates or with 1 -2 years of clinical experience

PHARMACIST

You will assist the Pharmacist-in-charge in providing a wide range of pharmaceutical and patient-oriented services in the Hospital and Retail Pharmacy. This will include dispensing, patient counselling, providing drug information and inventory management . You will also supervise a team of staff to ensure proper dispensing of medications according to protocol and regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

* Holder of Degree of Science (Pharmacy) or equivalent
* Registered with the Singapore Pharmacy Board
* Preferably with working knowledge of hospital-based and/or retail pharmacy operations

Requirements

* Minimum GCE ‘N’ Level
* ITE Skills Certificate in Health Care is preferred

PhD Assistantship: Fish Ecology

PhD student assistantship available to explore inter-population variation in early life stage recruitment dynamics and implications for intra-specific life history trait variation (e.g., maturation schedules, growth rates, and egg characteristics). Research will focus on fish populations in the Great Lakes and inland lakes in Indiana, and will involve an integration of field studies, laboratory analyses, controlled experiments and quantitative modeling analyses.

Selected individuals will enroll in Purdue University’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources (www.fnr.purdue.edu) in West Lafayette, IN.

Minimum qualifications include a BS and MS in Biology, Ecology, Fisheries Science, or related field; GPA of 3.2 or greater; and above average GRE scores (at least 50th percentile for quantitative and verbal; at least 4.0 for analytical writing).

Assistantships include 12-month stipend, full tuition coverage, and insurance.

Exact start date is negotiable (can start sometime from April-August 2009).

Graduate student assistantship in ecotoxicogenomics

We are currently looking for a PhD candidate for a project starting in May 2009. The objective of the research project is to develop a yellow perch microarray and to test its potential for detecting stress induced by chronic exposure to metals in natural environments. The project will involve field experiments and sampling as well as laboratory work in molecular biology, physiology and biochemistry. The candidate will be supervised by Patrice Couture and Peter Campbell (INRS-ETE) in close collaboration with Louis Bernatchez (Université Laval) for the molecular aspects and with our industrial partner (Vale Inco). The Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique centre Eau Terre Environnement is an exceptional training environment with leading-edge infrastructure and equipment and an interdisciplinary team of researchers. The Canada Research Chair in genomics and conservation of aquatic resources led by Louis Bernatchez is internationally recognized in the fields of fish genetics and genomics.
